Rams Head Coach Sean McVay Reveals He Injured Himself During Titans Game

The Los Angeles Rams will have an extra member on their injury report this week. Luckily he isn’t playing.

Sean McVay announced he tore his plantar facia in his foot in Los Angeles’ 33-19 win over the Tennessee Titans that pushed the Rams to 2-0 in Nashville on Sunday.

McVay, 39, is renowned for his sprinting around on the Rams sideline, both to celebrate and get officials’ attention.

The ninth-year Rams coach has used that activity to compile an 82-52 win-loss record for Los Angeles, guiding the team to the playoffs six times, including their win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI — which at 36 years, 20 days, made him the youngest Super Bowl-winning coach in NFL history.

The Rams will try to improve to 3-0 when they take on the reigning world-champion Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field in a playoff rematch from January. The Eagles held off McVay and the Rams 28-22 on Jan. 19.

What Did Sean McVay Say About His Foot Injury?

According to the Associated Press, McVay injured himself while sprinting to call a timeout. But he acknowledged that tearing the tissue — which runs through a person’s arch on his/her foot — is superior to the lingering effects of the more common plantar fasciitis, which is inflammation of the muscle.

“Foot’s good,” said McVay on the “Sean McVay Show” on Monday. “I did tear my plantar fascia, so yeah. Well, that’s a good thing, because I guess it allows you to heal a little faster. But I was being dramatic, limping around towards the end of the game, but the MRI confirmed I did that.”

The Rams have been fortunate to dodge the injury bug throughout much of this season, and even though his injury is painful, he acknowledged he’d rather be injured than some of his players.

“Good news is I’m not playing,” McVay said. “I’m just on the sidelines watching, so if I have a little cool limp to add some swag, then you’ll know why.”

What Did Sean McVay Say About Akhello Witherspoon’s Injury?

Unfortunately for the Rams, Akhello Witherspoon is supposed to be playing but will not be for the foreseeable future.

The veteran cornerback broke his collarbone in the Rams’ win over the Titans and was placed on injured reserve Monday.

“I feel terrible for Ahkello,” McVay said. “Love him, such a bummer.”

Witherspoon was off to a great start to his 2025 season, posting three solo tackles and one pass defended in LA’s first two games. He earned a 67.0 overall grade from Pro-Football Focus, good for 40th best among 140 qualifying cornerbacks, and has a 71.2 pass-coverage grade, which ranks 28th per PFF.

Luckily for the Rams, as McVay pointed out, they have depth at their outside DB position. McVay will turn to Cobie Durant, Emmanual Forbes Jr and Darious Williams to fill in in Witherspoon’s absence — and each had a pass defended against Tennessee after Witherspoon exited with the injury in the second quarter.

“You do feel fortunate to have the depth where you know a guy like (Williams) can step up to supplement both Cobie and Forbes,” McVay said.
