Rams Legend Todd Gurley Delivers Reality Check Before Colts Game

Todd Gurley’s tenure with the Los Angeles Rams did not end as either side had envisioned when the tailback was at his peak. However, Gurley still holds his former head coach, Sean McVay, and the current Rams in high regard and to a similar standard.

Gurley, a three-time Pro Bowler and two-time First Team All-Pro, last played for LA in 2019.

Despite his time removed, Gurley has a lot of appreciation for his experiences with the Rams and for what they can do this season, but only if they clean up their mistakes

Gurley noted that the Rams benefited from a game-sealing play by linebacker Nate Landman and facing a rookie quarterback in Cam Ward of the Tennessee Titans for their two wins on the season entering Week 4.

They were in control of their loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, too, before allowing a 19-point comeback to the reigning Super Bowl champions.

To Gurley, that was unacceptable for a team with lofty goals and the talent like the Rams have.

Gurley told RG.org’s Lorenzo Reyna in an interview published on September 27 that the loss to Philly was “tough,” but also said “that’s what happens,” referring to the consequences of the Rams having their field goal attempt blocked, which Eagles defensive tackle Jordan Davis returned for a game-sealing touchdown.

Gurley also lamented “a lot of missed third downs” and said “the Eagles should’ve never been in the game.”

“It’s a positive outlook on the game. But we ain’t gonna win nothing if we’re losing off a field goal,” Gurdley told Reyna. “That’s little problems you shouldn’t really worry about. There are still great things to take from the game.”

The Rams will look to get back into the win column against the 3-0 Indianapolis Colts in Week 4.

Gurley offered lofty praise for McVay, citing both playing for him and seeing how versatile he has been over the years as the Rams’ roster changed.

“Definitely a mastermind when it comes to offense. But even from him learning at such a young age,” Gurley said. “I think he’s been able to do a great job year after year. Plus being able to adjust whether he made trades or cuts and still being able to adjust from that.”

The Rams still roster five of Gurley’s ex-teammates.

Center Coleman Shelton and linebacker Troy Reeder, who both had one-year stints elsewhere in between then and 2025, cornerback Darious Williams, right tackle Rob Havenstein, and tight end Tyler Higbee all played with Gurley in his final season.

Gurley, who finished his NFL career with the Atlanta Falcons, also praised the Rams’ current playmakers, including saying, “I like” wide receiver Davante Adams’ addition twice.

“He’s got touchdowns in back-to-back games. But obviously, Puka Nacua being there I think is the clear-cut No. 1. Not that Davante isn’t a No. 1 WR, but Puka has been with Matt [Stafford] for three years, they still have their chemistry,” Gurley told Reyna.

“I like Davante Adams being there. I still feel like they haven’t really hit on all cylinders yet.”

Stafford has expressed similar confidence in the Rams’ offense, and specifically Adams, but their Week 3 loss was a reality check.
