Rams OC Mike LaFleur Opens Up on Rookie TE Terrance Ferguson’s Development

The Los Angeles Rams have enjoyed a strong start to the 2025 campaign, and even though they suffered a tough loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Week 5, they still have to feel pretty good about where they are through five games. The offense is moving the ball well, and the defense has generally done a good job of slowing down its opponent.

One guy the Rams would like to get more involved on the offensive side of the ball is rookie tight end Terrance Ferguson. In three games played, Ferguson has caught just one pass for 21 yards, and that recently led to offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur weighing in on Ferguson’s development early on in his NFL career.

Mike LaFleur Dishes on Terrance Ferguson

Los Angeles used a second-round pick on Ferguson in the 2025 draft, indicating that they have high hopes for him moving forward. The problem is that getting on the field has been tough, largely because the Rams have three other tight ends on their roster. Tyler Higbee, Davis Allen, and Colby Parkinson are all ahead of Ferguson on the depth chart, which has left him working behind the scenes in an effort to develop.

Further complicating matters is the fact that the Rams’ offense relies so heavily on Puka Nacua, Kyren Williams, and Davante Adams for production. With those guys soaking up so many touches, that makes it tough for Ferguson to make his mark when he does find his way onto the field.

Given his high draft position and the fact that he’s been used so sparingly, questions about Ferguson have begun to pop up. When asked about the situation, LaFleur made it clear that Ferguson is on the right track, while also noting that the team feels confident rolling out any of their four tight ends on any given play.

“He’s a smart dude,” LaFleur said of Ferguson. “He’s surrounded by a very smart coach and a lot of guys in that room that have played a lot of good football. They’ve gotten him up to speed, and whatever tight end is out there for our group, we feel very confident in them.”

Could Terrance Ferguson’s Role with Rams Expand?

Both Higbee and Parkinson are dealing with injuries, but that has opened the door for Allen to earn more snaps, not Ferguson. Los Angeles is intent on winning this season, so that doesn’t give much room to develop Ferguson on the fly, and even then, they have enough other guys at this spot where they don’t have to rush him into the action.

At some point, Los Angeles is going to want to see what Ferguson has to offer, as they did make a pretty big investment in him. And yet, if he remains at the bottom of the depth chart, LaFleur wants folks to know that that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The Rams will look to get back in the win column in Week 6 when they go up against the injury-riddled Baltimore Ravens.
