Rams’ Sean McVay Sends Confident Message on Steve Avila Before Ravens Game

The Los Angeles Rams have a great opportunity to get back in the win column when they take on the depleted Baltimore Ravens in Week 6. Further bolstering their odds of picking up their fourth win of the season is that it seems like they will be getting starting left guard Steve Avila back into the action on a full-time basis.

Sean McVay and the Rams’ coaching staff have played things safe with Avila as he attempts to work his way back to full health, and he has made good progress throughout the week. Ahead of the team’s clash with the Ravens, McVay offered an encouraging update on Avila that will surely make Los Angeles fans happy.

Sean McVay Issues Encouraging Steve Avila Injury Update

A second-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Avila immediately earned a starting job for the Rams at left guard, and he’s shown his promise frequently early on in his career. Unfortunately, injuries have been an issue for Avila, as he missed seven games last season before picking up an ankle injury in Los Angeles’ season-opening win over the Houston Texans.

Avila was forced to miss the Rams’ next two games entirely, and while he has suited up for their past two games, he’s only played special teams snaps, as the coaching staff has preferred to ease him back into the action. In his absence, Justin Dedich has continued to hold down the fort at left guard, and he’s made quite an impression on McVay.

However, it was always clear that once Avila was fully healthy, he’d reprise his starting role at left guard. Sure enough, after a strong week of practice, Avila has gotten himself removed from the team’s injury report, and McVay confirmed that he would be starting at left guard for Los Angeles’ offense when it takes the field on Sunday afternoon.

“He’s done a good job,” McVay said of Avila on Friday. “I’ve been pleased with Steve. He’s shown that he’s ready to go. When Steve is in there and playing like the player that we know and love and that he’s capable of, a lot of good things have happened … Expect Steve to be ready to roll and do his thing on Sunday.”

On paper, the Rams’ clash with the Ravens would appear to be one of the most difficult games on their schedule. Baltimore has been hit so hard by injuries, though, that the team will be almost unrecognizable heading into this one. Lamar Jackson is out for the second straight week, meaning Cooper Rush will be tasked with leading the offense once again in Week 6.

Considering how the Ravens suffered an ugly 44-10 blowout loss at the hands of the Texans in Week 5, the Rams are heavily favored to win this game now that Rush is back under center. Kickoff for this game is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET, and if all goes according to plan, L.A. will walk away from this one with its fourth win of the season.
