Rams’ Stafford Praises Rookie Tight End Ahead Of Week 1

The Los Angeles Rams decided to go with an offensive weapon with their first selection of the 2025 NFL Draft. The Rams selected tight end Terrance Ferguson with the 46th overall pick, providing another passing option for quarterback Matthew Stafford.

A reporter asked Stafford about his thoughts on the rookies’ development throughout the offseason, with the quarterback having high remarks about the tight end.

“He’s done a nice job,” Stafford said of the rookie. “Obviously, missed a little bit of time there in training camp. So, having him back out there… has been great.”

“He’s a ton of talent. A guy that’s figuring out the NFL, understanding where he fits in our offense. He’s got a bunch of guys in that room to really lean on to help show him the way. Just happy to have him on our team. Really talented kid and a person that cares about football, cares about our team.”

Stafford said earlier in the offseason that he was a fan of Ferguson during his last season at Oregon and he’s excited to have the player on the team.

In his four seasons of collegiate football with the Oregon Ducks, the tight end recorded 1,537 and 15 touchdowns.

Terrance Ferguson To Play Big Role With Team

The Los Angeles Rams currently have four players in the tight end room. Terrance Ferguson has the least experience in the offensive schemes that head coach Sean McVay runs, allowing the other three options to receive more snaps.

Despite this, McVay affirms that Ferguson will be a key piece to the Rams.

“For us to be able to go back, still get a player that we would’ve felt good with earlier in terms of where we would’ve drafted him, was a really big deal,” McVay said. “We were super excited about being able to come away with Terrance Ferguson, who we have big plans for.”

Ferguson suffered a groin injury during training camp that kept him out of the Rams’ first two preseason games. The tight end was able to make his preseason debut in the final preseason game, where he had 2 receptions for 48 yards.

McVay said after the game that he believes the tight end played well in the run game, but mentioned that Ferguson needs to finish plays better.

Ferguson had two weeks from the end of preseason to Week 1 to polish any last-minute things the coaching staff is asking of him.

Chemistry With Matthew Stafford

The Los Angeles Rams were able to get their first look at the connection between Matthew Stafford and Terrance Ferguson during spring training.

With the small chemistry between Stafford and Ferg, they could carry that into the regular season and may be able to develop into a dominant QB-TE duo.

Due to the back issue Stafford suffered before the start of training camp (and Ferguson’s groin injury), the two haven’t had much time to share the practice field since.

A lot is riding on Stafford and his back issue, which may hinder Ferguson if his starting QB were to go down. The Rams have an experienced backup in Jimmy Garoppolo if Stafford were to be out a game or longer.

Both Stafford and Ferguson appear to be in good health to play in their Week 1 matchup against the Houston Texans.
