The New York Rangers are looking to turn the page on last year’s disastrous season.
The Rangers had the best record in the NHL two years ago, but missed the playoffs last season, which was a surprise. New York has since shuffled up their roster, but it may not be done, as Heavy.com proposed a deal that would see the Rangers acquire Jason Robertson from the Dallas Stars.
Rangers acquire:
Stars acquire:
- Gabe Perreault
- Brennan Othmann
- 2026 first-round pick
- 2028 third-round pick
The proposed deal would be a blockbuster as the Rangers acquire Robertson to be a first-line forward. In return, New York would give up two draft picks, including a first-round pick and two young NHL players.
The Rangers would acquire Robertson, who’s in the final year of his four-year, $31 million deal. Robertson would be a first-line forward for New York. He could also give some insurance to the Rangers if Artemi Panarin leaves next offseason in free agency. Robertson had a solid year last season as he recorded 35 goals and 45 assists for 80 points in 82 games. His career-high came in 2022-23 as he had 46 goals and 63 assists for 109 points.
The Rangers would give up a haul. But New York has two first-round picks next year, so moving one of them is fine. Perreault, meanwhile, would be hard to part with, but he needs to be part of the trade for it to go through. Perreault was selected 16th overall in 2021 and could be a top-six forward for the Stars. He skated in 5 NHL games last season, recording 0 points after leaving college.
Othmann, meanwhile, is a former first-round pick who hasn’t found his footing with the Rangers. A change of scenery for the 22-year-old could be needed.
Rangers GM Leaving Door Open for Young Players
With New York wanting to be a playoff team next season, the Rangers should be fine making some big moves, like dealing young players.
Perreault is expected to have a big role with the Rangers this season, while Othmann will look to compete for a roster spot. General manager Chris Drury says he’s hoping the young players take the next step.
“I want players to have goals of coming in here and making the team,” Drury said. “That’s why young players like him and (Brett) Berard and (Brennan) Othmann are working so hard in the summer. To come back and give themselves the best chance to be Rangers in the fall.”
The Rangers added Taylor Raddysh to the forward group while trading away Chris Kreider, as New York put more of an emphasis on defense.
Robertson’s Name Heavily Involved in Trade Rumors
Although Robertson is one of the best players in the NHL, his name has come up in trade rumors.
Robertson is entering the final year of his deal. NHL analyst Dan Rosen of NHL.com believes it’s a 50-50 chance he gets traded.
“There have been plenty of rumors and discussion about Robertson’s future with the Dallas Stars. It obviously leads to speculation about the 26-year-old forward potentially being on the move before this season even begins,” Rosen wrote. “So, what’s the likelihood he is traded? Cop-out answer. But probably 50/50 at this point because it really depends on if the Stars and Robertson can or even want to try to get a new deal done sooner rather than later.”
With the Stars right up against the cap, moving Robertson for two young, cheap forwards and draft picks could be the move for Dallas.
