Fans of the Texas Rangers may have been alarmed to hear trade rumors involving shortstop Corey Seager over the Winter Meetings.
Yet, executive vice president and general manager Chris Young cleared up the rumors and assuaged any angst Rangers fans may be feeling by saying he is “not motivated” to move the 2023 World Series MVP.
Seager is a three-time All-Star since joining the Rangers on a 10-year, $325 million contract, and was the runner up to Shohei Ohtani for AL MVP in the Rangers’ championship season.
He slashed .271/.373/.487 in 2025 with 21 home runs, 50 RBIs, 61 runs scored in 102 games, while missing 60 games due to a hamstring injury and emergency appendectomy.
The Rangers Are ‘Not Motivated To Move’ Corey Seager
Seager is going to turn 32 in April and is locked in for six more years at $31 million per year through 2031. His deal is unlikely to age well, and trading him could be a way to get out from under that, especially for teams that are more in win-now mode.
Yet, according to Young, the Rangers are one of those teams.
“Weâre not motivated to move him,â â Young said, according to the Dallas Morning News. âWeâre trying to win. Corey is a great player. You have to have great players to win. Thatâs why we signed him.
Texas is still just two disappointing years removed from that World Series title. The Rangers have averaged 79 wins per year over the past two years but were in the hunt for the AL wild card until their 2-11 season-ending stretch in 2025 landed them at .500.
Yet, Young has already shown a penchant for tweaking their roster by trading infielder Marcus Semien to the New York Mets for Brandon Nimmo. But that isn’t the only potential move Young has considered over the past week.
“The reality is, every team is looking for great players, and there have been a number of teams that have checked in on a number of our great players,” Young said. “The reality is, we are not motivated to move Corey Seager. We are trying to win a championship 2026 and in order to do that, we need great players.
“Teams do their job and their diligence trying to find out whoâs available and whoâs not, but I canât say thereâs any substance to anything more than a normal check-in. Normal operating procedure for this time of year. Everyone does it.â
Corey Seager Rumors Likely Came From The Red Sox
That Young had to address the rumors is likely due to the Boston Red Sox, who undoubtedly were the main club to check in on Seager.
Boston went 89-73 in 2025 and finished as the AL’s No. 2 wild card and finished seventh in the majors in runs scored (786).
Yet, the Red Sox are undoubtedly trying to find a replacement left-handed bat for Rafael Devers and upgrade their offense, which scored only six runs in their three-game AL Wild Card Series loss to the New York Yankees.
The Yankees and Atlanta Braves also reportedly checked in on Seager, but the Boston Globe reported the rumors. That means it is likely the Red Sox want the deal to get done.
