The Toronto Raptors could be without a key player for their NBA Cup matchup with the New York Knicks on Tuesday, December 9.
Immanuel Quickley was a late addition to the injury report Tuesday for Toronto with an undisclosed illness. He is questionable for the game against New York at Scotiabank Arena. The guard logged 11 points, one rebound and five assists in 31 minutes in the Raptors last contest on Sunday, December 7, a 121-113 loss against the Boston Celtics.
Quickley has not missed a game this season, and Toronto will likely monitor his situation leading up to pregame warmups on Tuesday. If he cannot suit up, forwards Brandon Ingram and Scottie Barnes will likely have to shoulder most of the offensive responsibilities for the Raptors.
Immanuel Quickley Leading Resurgence For Toronto Raptors
Quickley has been a key piece of the Raptors’ resurgence this year, after they missed the playoffs in the last two seasons. The Kentucky product is having one of his best all-round seasons, averaging 16.5 points, 4.2 rebounds and 6.2 assists while shooting 47% from the field and 38.2% from three.
In his last 10 games, Quickley is averaging 17.5 points per game, including a 31 point outing against the Charlotte Hornets on December 5. Toronto is 5-5 in that span.
Quickley’s consistent performance has helped Toronto continue to win without RJ Barrett, who has missed the last nine games since spraining his right knee against the Brooklyn Nets on November 23. The forward was averaging 19.4 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists while shooting 50.6% from the field and 35.6% from beyond the arc before the injury.
Barrett is going to miss at least one more week after getting an injection in his knee on Monday, but when he is back in the fold, the Raptors could be aggressive in the lead up to the NBA trade deadline. Toronto may be one of the teams looking to acquire Dallas Mavericks big man Anthony Davis, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Immanuel Quickley History With New York Knicks
If Quickley misses tonight’s game against New York, he’ll miss out on the opportunity to play against his former team. The Raptors acquired Quickley and Barrett in a trade with the Knicks in December 2023, sending OG Anunoby, Precious Achiuwa and Malachi Flynn to New York.
Quickley finished second in the voting for Sixth Man of the Year for 2022-23, when he was in New York. Since joining Toronto, he has become a full-time starter and increased his scoring output, averaging 17.5 points per game with the Raptors as compared to 12.9 points per game with the Knicks.
In the Raptors’ last meeting with the Knicks, a 116-94 loss on November 30, Quickley was the team’s leading scorer with 19 points.
