Baltimore Ravens linebacker Teddye Buchanan enjoyed a successful rookie season. Yet, his future remains a mystery. The 2025 fourth-round pick from the University of California made 93 tackles in 14 games (13 starts). On the “Ryan Ripken Show,” Buchanan reflected on his first NFL year, highlighting interactions with veteran leaders.
“Playing alongside Ro, that is huge for a young player like myself. He’s the best ‘backer in the league. The way he’s a quarterback for our defense. Just to see a guy like that go to work every day, to be around him constantly, and to build a connection in the field.”

In addition to his 93 stops, Buchanan forced a fumble and knocked down a pass. Under new head coach Jesse Minter, how could Buchanan’s role change? Meanwhile, what impact will the new defense have on linebacker chemistry?
Ravens LB Teddye Buchanan Strong Rookie Campaign Opened Eyes
Last season, Buchanan opened the season with 18 tackles over his first three games. In supplanting Trenton Simpson in the starting role at right inside linebacker, the rookie served notice with a strong debut. A 15-tackle effort against the Houston Texans on October 5 gave teammates and the fanbase a glimpse into what to expect.
In winning the NFL Rookie Defensive Player of the Month for October 2025, many believed that Buchanan would become a staple in the Ravens defense. Subsequently, he was also named to the Pro Football Writers Association All-Rookie Team.

Injury Rehab and Schematic Change Pose Potential Difficulties.
On December 14, Buchanan suffered a season-ending ACL injury against the Cincinnati Bengals. With 100 tackles within his grasp and a potential playoff spot close, the rookie’s season ended, being relegated to spectator status. ACL injuries take roughly nine months to heal. That places Buchanan’s timetable for a return for September at the earliest.
On top of that, Minter’s defense in Los Angeles centered around five players near the line of scrimmage with two linebackers. By the time Buchanan returns, Simpson will have enjoyed an entire summer head start, learning the new scheme on the field.
If Buchanan’s replacement plays well, Buchanan could fall further down the depth chart with little chance to move up. In the meantime, he may see extended time on special teams. Transitioning from starter to special teams ace is not an easy task.
A Potential Upside of the Process
As mentioned, Buchanan connected with Smith. During his rehabilitation, he can attend OTAs and camp, staying in constant contact with the Ravens’ leadership. Arguably the smartest and most instinctive player on defense, Buchanan could also join study sessions with Smith.
Minter, known as a meticulous teacher, breaks down the impact and role of every player, a process familiar to Smith. The Ravens have relied on him to command the defense since his arrival via trade with the Chicago Bears.

If all goes well, Buchanan will return by the season kickoff. However, he will enter a huddle with several new players. For example, Kyle Van Noy may not return. The Ravens have 19 unrestricted free agents as free agency begins March 11. Adjusting from college to the pros is always tough for a rookie. Now add a serious injury and a coaching change. How will Buchanan perform when he steps on the field next fall?
