Ravens OC Notes ‘Subtle’ Lamar Jackson Change Producing ‘Outstanding’ Results

There’s not much room for improvement in Lamar Jackson’s game, but the Baltimore Ravens quarterback has still found ways to make strides in training camp.

The regular-season opener in Buffalo is less than a month away, and at this point, the ramp-up period is all about fine-tuning when your skillset is elite as what Jackson brings to the table. Yet, Jackson has still found ways to get better, and his coaches and teammates are taking note.

Jackson’s physical skills and traits make him one of the NFL’s top quarterbacks without even trying, but it’s the softer skills that have those in Baltimore believing he have yet another level he can get to.

Offensive coordinator Todd Monken spoke about the one area in which he’s seen the most improvement from Jackson, and it should have Ravens fans excited for 2025 — and beyond.

The ‘Subtle’ Way Lamar Jackson Continues to Improve

“It’s subtle,” Monken explained to reporters in a weekly press conference. “I  think with every year that we’re running the same offense, and we’re together, we communicate better, (and we) get to learn each other better. (His) likes, dislikes, how he sees the game, how I see it, how we bring it together (with) our staff. …

“But his command at the line of scrimmage — I think he’s doing a better job with our guys consistently, what he expects from them and being on the same page, so you can just see that part of it. And again, I can only speak to the last two years, so I can’t speak before then, but he’s been outstanding.”

Monken isn’t the only one who’s taking notice. Veteran receiver Rashod Bateman, who enjoyed his best season to date in 2024, paid Jackson a similar compliment a few days before Monken’s assessment.

“He’s more vocal than he ever has been about what he wants from us, even to the staff and the offensive linemen,” Bateman told reporters. “He’s definitely pushing the agenda of just staying hungry and being competitive. He’s definitely a competitive guy, and he’s leading us in the right direction with that.”

How Lamar Jackson’s Development Could Be Difference for Ravens

It’s easy to forget Jackson is still just 28. Basically since Day 1, the Louisville product has put up numbers that will have him on the fast track to Canton regardless of whether the Ravens can actually break through and win a Super Bowl. He just had the best season of his career, which is saying something, authoring a 2024 campaign that is one of the best we’ve ever seen from a quarterback. He has answered questions about durability, and he has made noticeable improvements when it comes to his accuracy as a passer.

Jackson doesn’t have a negative reputation when it comes to his leadership ability, but if these improvements can make those around him even better, it might finally be the year the Ravens can go on a deep playoff run.

Before that, Jackson and the Ravens certainly should be looking to set the tone early. It’s even more important for Baltimore to hit the ground running with games against Buffalo, Detroit and Kansas City — a trio of teams that combined to go 43-8 in 2024 — over their first four games of the season.
