After allowing seven sacks on Monday against the Detroit Lions, the Baltimore Ravens may be looking to add some depth to their offensive line.
On Friday, according to Nate Bouda of NFL Trade Rumors, the Ravens hosted offensive lineman Kenyon Green and punter Luke Elzinga for tryouts.
Green is 24 years old and was the 15th pick of the first round by the Houston Texans in the 2022 draft out of Texas A&M, where he was a two-time Consensus All-American in 2020 and 2021. Despite a decorated college career, Green’s path in the pros has been anything but smooth.
Trying to Beat the Bust Label
Kenyon Green’s struggles began right away in Houston. Ronnie Eastham of ToroTimes in his July 2023 article, highlighted how in 2022 PFF ranked Green 77th out of 77 guards and he received a 37.3 grade, while allowing 47 pressures. Green also finished tied with the second-most penalties in the league with 12.
The Texans finally moved on from Green this offseason when they traded him to the Philadelphia Eagles for safety CJ Gardner-Johnson and a 2026 sixth-round pick.
Green was expected to compete for the Eagles’ starting guard role after the departure of Mekhi Becton in free agency, but Green faded quickly in training camp and lost the role to Tyler Steen.
At the end of the preseason, Green was waived by the Eagles. He was subsequently signed and waived twice before being re-signed. Now the Ravens are giving Green a shot to make the team.
Todd Monken is Not Concerned With the Line
The Ravens offered little resistance to the Lions’ pass rush on Monday. Quarterback Lamar Jackson was sacked seven times in a frustrating night. However, offensive coordinator Todd Monken isn’t panicking over the result of one game.
At his press availability on September 25, Monken emphasized that the problems with the line will be fixed because he believes in the Ravens’ linemen’s abilities. Ravens.com provided the transcription of Monken’s answer.
“No, it’s like anything that shows up, like I’m not concerned about Derrick [Henry] fumbling, because he’s a pro,” Monken said. “He’s going to fix it. I’m not concerned about our protection because I think we have really good offensive linemen. I think we scheme it up really well.”
Monken then discussed how the Ravens need to do a better job of preventing exotic pressures by staying ahead of the sticks.
“Sometimes, when you get behind the sticks, you’re going to get more and more exotic pressures. When you’re ahead in games, your protection is going to hold up a hell of a lot better than when you’re behind,” Monken continued. “You’re going to see a lot more exotic pressures, because they know you have to throw it, and that’s going to put a lot more stress on your protection schemes and your offensive line. So, those are the things that you control by trying to get ahead and stay ahead, and that puts you at an advantage and ahead of the sticks, for sure.”
While Monken doesn’t appear worried about his line going forward, the Ravens may want to take a flyer on someone with first-round talent like Kenyon Green.
