The New York Jets lost starting right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker to a serious arm injury that could cost him the entire 2025 season, per NFL Insider Connor Hughes of SNY.
One potential place the Jets could turn to is the retirement home.
Brandon Scherff, 33, just announced his retirement in the middle of August from the NFL after a 10-year career. It might be time to tune up the band again.
A Modern Solution for a Modern Problem
The former Iowa product entered the league as the No. 5 overall pick in the first round of the 2015 NFL draft.
During his career, he earned five Pro-Bowl nominations and was once named a first-team All-Pro.
Scherff has appeared in and started 140 games. Over the last three years, Scherff has started 51 straight games.
He is the best available option days before the start of the 2025 season.
Jets’ Likely Plan Is Shuffling the O-Line Deck
If the Jets don’t add any players ahead of the Week 1 contest against the Pittsburgh Steelers, we will likely see some musical chairs in the trenches.
Hughes explained for SNY that we have already seen the Jets’ cards.

Earlier this offseason, the Jets were without starting left guard John Simpson, who was dealing with a back issue. The Jets kicked Joe Tippmann from center to left guard and inserted veteran Josh Myers into the lineup at center.
That is likely the plan mere days ahead of the season opener.
Scherff Is Exactly What the Jets Are Looking For
After we get past Week 1, the Jets need to find a more permanent answer on the offensive line.
Vera-Tucker was supposed to be the starting right guard. With him out for the foreseeable future, it would make the most sense to find a suitable answer at that same position so the entire line doesn’t have to shift around.
Scherff has entered the chat.
Since coming into the league, Scherff has exclusively played right guard.
According to Pro Football Focus, Scherff has registered 8,856 snaps at right guard during his 10-year career in the NFL.
“Scherff was an incredibly explosive, twitched-up guard whose peak rivaled any guard in the last decade. He was an elite puller and special run blocker with a potent jump set that will be studied for many years to come. Scherff was also a rookie in 2015 which is exactly when I started studying OL film full-time so his career was extra special and impactful on the way I view the position,” OL guru Brandon Thorn posted on social media.

The Jets want to run the football and establish a physical tone on the offensive side of the ball. Losing the player whom Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic described as your best offensive lineman doesn’t help those efforts.
Scherff could help fill the void and allow the Jets to play the brand of football their head coach, Aaron Glenn, envisioned.
