The Boston Red Sox are being extremely thorough in their attempt to improve their roster. The American League East team has been linked with a plethora of players in free agency this offseason. This lengthy list mostly includes infielders, particularly Alex Bregman, Bo Bichette, and Pete Alonso.
Boston is also not just crossing their fingers and hoping to upgrade its infield. The club is a legitimate contender to grab any of these three players. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic believes Bregman remains the team’s top priority in free agency, though. The third baseman signed with the team last winter, but recently opted out of his contract. Despite this, the Red Sox are trying to get him to sign a fresh deal.
While Bregman is plan A, the Red Sox are willing to make a major trade if they fail to sign a top free agent. Boston has been linked with a potential trade for Arizona Diamondbacks star Ketel Marte in recent days. The versatile Silver Slugger, however, is not the team’s only target.
According to Rosenthal, the Red Sox are also eyeing a deal for Houston Astros All-Star Isaac Paredes. “Paredes, who is under club control for two more seasons with a projected $9.3 million salary in 2026, is yet another hitter in whom the Red Sox have expressed interest, according to sources briefed on their discussions,” claimed the reporter.
Isaac Paredes Would Give the Boston Red Sox Versatility in the Infield

GettyThe Boston Red Sox could still trade for Isaac Paredes even if they re-sign Alex Bregman.
Paredes has primarily played third base throughout his successful MLB career. In fact, outside of designated hitter, he only featured at the hot corner for Houston during the 2025 season. Because of this, many would assume that Boston’s interest in Paredes would intensify if Bregman opts to sign with another team.
Nevertheless, the two-time All-Star has experience at every other infield position. Paredes was previously deployed at first base, second base, and even shortstop during his time with both the Tampa Bay Rays and Detroit Tigers. This versatility would be beneficial for the Red Sox.
Assuming Boston does bring Bregman back, Rosenthal believes the Red Sox could still target Paredes. In this scenario, Bregman would slot in at third, while Paredes would then mostly feature for Boston at first base. If this were to happen, it may very well signify that Alonso will not be signing with the Red Sox.
Houston Astros Show Interest in Two Top Boston Red Sox Prospects
With Paredes under control and being named an All-Star in each of the last two seasons, Houston would ask for a lot in a potential trade. Rosenthal expects the Astros to be interested in young starting pitchers in the trade market. The reporter even suggested that Houston has already registered interest in Boston’s duo of Payton Tolle and Connelly Early.
MiLB previously placed both of the pitchers in Boston’s top five prospect rankings in 2025. Tolle found success in the minors during the most recent season, but allowed 11 earned runs in 16 1/3 innings with the Red Sox. Early, on the other hand, posted a 2.33 ERA in four starts on the season with the big league team. Rosenthal believes that Boston will likely have to part ways with one of these top prospects, along with other assets, in a deal for Paredes.
