Red Sox Get a Hugh Pete Alonso Sweepstakes Update From MLB Insider

After acquiring Sonny Gray from the St. Louis Cardinals, there is still a lot of work to be done for the Boston Red Sox and Craig Breslow this offseason. Another arm for the rotation is needed, but so is a big bat.

There are still questions as to whether or not Alex Bregman will return. There should be more of a clearer answer after the upcoming Winter Meetings in Orlando. One big bat on the free agent market that has been linked to the Red Sox for Pete Alonso.

He is looking for a long-term deal. It doesn’t sound like he’ll give the New York Mets a hometown discount. That’s simply what Scott Boras clients don’t do. Several teams would love a power-hitting first baseman. With the Winter Meetings approaching, Jim Bowden of The Athletic reported that there are two likely finalists for Alonso, and it was good news for Boston.

Jim Bowden Lists the Mets and Red Sox as Pete Alonso’s Most Likely Landing Spot

Since the season ended, Alonso has been linked to the Red Sox. The match makes too much sense from the outside. Boston upgrading at first base with questions surrounding Tristan Casas makes sense. He missed most of 2025 with an injury. Injuries have been an issue for him with the Red Sox. If Boston decides to go all-in for Alonso, it would make sense.

“There are several teams besides the Mets who are potentially shopping for a first baseman, including the Red Sox, Pirates, Reds, Angels, Rays, Nationals, Diamondbacks, Rockies, and Twins. However, his two most likely landing spots remain the Mets and Red Sox,” Bowden wrote.

Casas looked like a promising prospect early in his career. However, as Daniel Fox of Just Baseball points out, he has failed to live up to his rookie success.

“With so much success so early on in his career, Casas looked poised to become one of the game’s next great sluggers,” Fox wrote. “His detractors, however, will point out that the last two years have seen Casas fail to live up to the promise he showed as a rookie, thanks to a combination of untimely injuries and an alarming strikeout rate.”

Those would be enough causes for concern to go after Alonso aggressively. Adding him at first base, along with his power from the right side, would be perfect for Fenway Park.

Red Sox Should Go All-In for Pete Alonso

Alonso is projected to get a five-year, $145 million contract, according to Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report. It wouldn’t be surprising if it ended up higher. Boston has also been linked to Philadelphia Phillies free agent Kyle Schwarber, but Alonso would be the better fit at Fenway. Alonso also did not get a qualifying offer from New York, which means it would be straight cash with no compensation. Schwarber did get a qualifying offer, which means the Phillies would receive a compensatory pick.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported that Boston would like to sign at least two bats.  Alonso was listed as five potential targets.

“The Red Sox are considering signing up to two of these five big-time lineup enhancements: uber-popular Kyle Schwarber, plus Pete Alonso, Kazuma Okamoto, and J.T. Realmuto, as well as last winter’s big pickup, Alex Bregman,” Heyman wrote.

Just how high and far the Red Sox go with money and length remains to be seen. It feels like Alonso is a priority, and Boston is very much in the mix to sign him.
