Red Sox Get Bad Alex Bregman Scenario From MLB Insider

Alex Bregman is still weighing his options as a free agent following his 2025 MLB season with the Boston Red Sox. If Boston want to retain the veteran infielder, they continue to get bad news over this possibility.

On December 16, Jon Heyman of The New York Post reported that the Arizona Diamondbacks are showing interest in Bregman, one of the most sought-after free agents this offseason.

The D-backs need a third baseman after trading Eugenio Suarez, who hit 36 home runs for Arizona last season, to the Seattle Mariners ahead of July’s trade deadline. Moreover, Bob Nightengale of USA Today floated the possibility of the Philadelphia Phillies being a landing spot for Bregman.

“I think the [Alec] Bohm thing would be the X-Factor,” Nightengale said on the December 17 edition of “Foul Territory.” “I could see [the Phillies] moving Bohm. Then, if they want, they could jump in on Bregman. Right now, they’re going to run the same thing back, except for Justin Crawford, he’ll be a starting center fielder. They’re excited about [Adolis] Garcia. They think he’ll bounce back

“So they made enough little moves. But I think Bohm is the only guy who could possibly move and then shake things up even more. But right now, Dave Dombrowski said, ‘We’re set. We’re not getting more outfielders. And nobody asked him about Bohm, but that’s certainly a possibility.”

Red Sox Urged to Re-Sign Alex Bregman

Boston recently received an urgent signal regarding Alex Bregman after two top free agents have already signed elsewhere.

Kyle Schwarber and Pete Alonso were both considered strong candidates for the Red Sox, given uncertainties at first base. Instead, Schwarber re-signed with the Phillies, while Alonso joined the Baltimore Orioles.

With those players off the board, MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo believes the Red Sox need to go all in to ensure Bregman returns to Fenway Park next season.

“I think he’s a guy that always made sense and makes sense even more now with Schwarber and Alonso off the board, Cotillo said during a December 16 appearance on MLB Network. “They want to add power—that’s very clear. But they do have holes in the infield.

“I’ve talked to some people within the organization who say, ‘Look, Bregman slowed down offensively with the bat when he came back from the injury a little early, but he won us games with his glove last year, too. That’s an underrated part of this for a team that has struggled with infield defense for five or six years now. So I think it might take a little while for them to come to terms on value.”

Alex Bregman Has Many Suitors

The Red Sox aren’t guaranteed to bring Bregman back on a long-term deal. Cotillo pointed out that several other teams are also pursuing the former Houston Astros star, making a reunion with Boston far from certain.

“I think it’s more likely that he returns than it was a couple of weeks ago when they were pursuing the Alonsos and, to a lesser degree, the Schwarbers of the world, Cotillo added. “But he could also have some big offers elsewhere.

“People are worried about the market. The Cubs are involved. The Tigers wanted him a year ago. I could see the Mariners. I don’t know where the money is going to come from, but seeing him as a guy [who] can put them over the edge, I think he’ll have his pick.

“The one thing I think is he’s not going to go for that short-term pillow deal again. I think he’s going to go for the biggest deal, the most amount of years, and have this be, hopefully for him, the last contract of his career. We’ll see if the Red Sox can get to that financial point.”
