Amidst all of the rumors flying around on who the Boston Red Sox might be interested in acquiring this offseason, no one really had Corey Seager on their bingo cards. The five-time all-star shortstop was brought up in trade rumors with the Sox, as they look to bolster their roster to contend for a World Series in 2026.
Unfortunately for any fans that may have become excited about this possibility, I apologize but I have to squash your hopes: Red Sox reporter Rob Bradford confirmed yesterday that there is “no momentum” as far as a potential Seager acquisition goes.
Seager is heading into year five of a 10 year, $325 million deal with the Texas Rangers. As the Rangers look to re-tool heading into 2026, it was a possibility that they were looking to move away from Seager’s expensive contract.
Even if they do, it looks more than likely that dance partner won’t be the Boston Red Sox.
Seager Would Have Been Massive Addition For Boston
Playing devil’s advocate on the slim, slim chance that this move could still happen, Seager would be an absolute home run (sorry for the pun) of an acquisition for the Red Sox.
Seager, 31, is maybe a hair past his peak, but is still one of the best all-around shortstops in the MLB. He was a stalwart in the Rangers lineup in 2023, when he helped them win their first World Series in franchise history. He has 221 home runs in over 1,100 games played in the league, while sporting a career WAR of 43, which is the 26th best of active MLB players.
Though Boston has Trevor Story under team control for three more seasons, he or Seager could easily play second or third base. Acquiring Seager would also negate the need to re-sign Alex Bregman, who will likely cost more than Seager’s $31.5 million AAV based on his market value which will increase as more teams bid on him.
Bradford didn’t deliver a firm “no” on Seager, so who knows, maybe Boston and Texas can work something out.
Red Sox Still in Need of Big Time Power Bat This Offseason
Since the Sox acquired Sonny Gray a couple of weeks ago, the front office has been quiet as several free agents are beginning to sign. Kyle Schwarber and Edwin Diaz are the two big names that have come off the board already, but Boston’s white whale is still floating in the ocean of MLB free agency.
That white whale is of course Pete Alonso. Alonso attended the MLB winter meetings according to reports, and had a sit down meeting with the Red Sox representatives. He also met with the Baltimore Orioles.
I think I speak for all Red Sox fans when I say that if Boston loses out on Alonso to the Orioles (the freaking Orioles), all hope will be tossed out the window when it comes to signing big name free agents during the John Henry-Craig Breslow reign in Boston.
As it stands, reports seem to favor the Red Sox, as Alonso seems most inclined to ship up to Massachusetts, but it is certainly a storyline worth keeping an eye on until a deal gets done.
