The Boston Red Sox have made significant moves in the trade market, acquiring Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras. However, the Red Sox could be looking to make one big splash in free agency as they appear keen on re-signing free-agent hitter Alex Bregman.
Nonetheless, a Dec. 16 report from MLB.com did reveal that Boston met with free-agent infielder Bo Bichette via Zoom. As a result, the Red Sox aren’t putting all their eggs in the Bregman basket.
Still, former MLB player Cole Tucker stated on MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM that it would be in the Red Sox’s best interest to bring back Bregman over pursuing Bichette with both players still available.
“It feels like Boston’s whole offseason hinges on getting Alex Bregman back in there,” Tucker said in a Jan. 4 video posted by MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM. “I think that they really need him [and] that his swing and his profile really suit Fenway Park… I like Bregman more in Boston than Bo Bichette. It just feels like with Marcelo Meyer, Trevor Story, [and] Kristian Campbell. That middle infield is going to figure itself out over time.”
The Red Sox Don’t Need to Go All In With Alex Bregman
Nonetheless, former MLB player Chris Gimenez believes that Boston doesn’t need to go all out to bring back Bregman.
“I think where they’re at, they still have a ton of talent on this roster,” Gimenez said in a December 27 video posted by MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM. “Does Alex Bregman help that out? Yes, of course he does. He’s the adult in the room. He’s the leader of that clubhouse. Somebody would have to fill that role. But you just made the trade for Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras. That’s going to help from the power standpoint, that you may lose from Alex Bregman departing.
“I also think these young guys are ready, they’re ready. The Red Sox are actually in a really good position, if you ask me. I don’t think they have to sign Alex Bregman. Do I want them to? Yes, because I think he’s the perfect fit there. I would also like to see him in Toronto, because I think that’s a really good fit for him as well.”
Red Sox’s Young Talent Needs to Step Up in 2026
Moreover, Gimenez believes that Boston need to let their young talent take the reins to see if they are ready to replace the production that Bregman will leave behind.
“The Red Sox have a lot of young talent that they have to find time for, that they have to develop at the big-league level,” Gimenez added. “Marcelo Mayer, I know he’s been hurt a lot, but he’s got to figure it out at the big-league level at this point. So I don’t think it’s the worst thing in the world if they don’t bring him back. I don’t think they drop dramatically. Will they drop? Certainly, yes. They still have a very good roster as it is.”
