If there is one thing we know about Alex Bregman and Scott Boras, they are in no rush to sign a new contract. That was never more evident than last year when Bregman agreed to a deal with the Boston Red Sox at the start of spring training.
It wouldn’t be surprising if it trended that way again this winter. However, you get the feeling that there will be a resolution sooner rather than later. The Red Sox have a lot of interest in two of the top remaining position-free agents, Bregman and Bo Bichette of the Toronto Blue Jays. When the dust settled, it would not be surprising to see one of them with Boston.
The case can be made for Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow to sign either player. Bichette is younger, but he knows what he’s getting in Bregman. Buster Olney of ESPN gave an update on Bregman while appearing on an episode of “1st Up,” and it was a good one for Boston fans.
Buster Olney Believes Boston Will Sign Alex Bregman
There have been a handful of teams linked to Bregman. The Arizona Diamondbacks, Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers, and Blue Jays have all been linked to him. Olney believes that Breslow has made an aggressive offer to bring back his third baseman.
“I think Alex Bregman is gonna go back to the Red Sox. From what I understand, the Red Sox have made an aggressive offer on him,” Olney said.
That is a different take than what Mark Feinsand of MLB.com had on Thursday. He reported that the Blue Jays and Diamondbacks remain the two most aggressive teams.
“Sources believe the Blue Jays and Diamondbacks may be the two most aggressive clubs in the hunt for Bregman, though a Red Sox reunion remains a possibility,” Feinsand wrote.
The Arizona connection is interesting. He lives in the area in the offseason, which is convenient. Will the Diamondbacks give Bregman the long-term deal he wants and more money than Boston or Toronto? According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the interest is real.
“Both the Toronto Blue Jays and Arizona Diamondbacks have emerged as legitimate suitors for Bregman, according to sources briefed on the discussions. Other clubs, including the Chicago Cubs, also are said to be involved,” Rosenthal wrote.
Red Sox Feel Like They Are All-In For Bregman
This certainly feels like it’s Alex Bregman or bust for Breslow and the Boston front office. They missed out on Pete Alonso, who signed with the Baltimore Orioles. Perhaps the interest in Bichette is legit, but it feels like he’s a Bregman back-up option for the Red Sox.
The offseason has not been a great one yet for Breslow. He did acquire Wilsson Contreras from the St. Louis Cardinals to play first base. He added Sonny Gray from the Cardinals and Johan Oviedo from the Pittsburgh Pirates. They still need another bat in the middle of the lineup.
The American League East got tougher, and the Red Sox have some additions. Bregman would be the big addition Breslow needs. Olney’s update is one that is promising for Boston fans. However, until it’s done, anything is possible.
