There has been some good news of late for the Red Sox and the team’s roster, which is much-needed in these parts given the way the last week of the season has unfolded in the standings. Boston has dropped three straight series and lost seven of its last eight games to drop into fourth place in the division, three games under .500 and 3.0 games in back of a wild-card spot.
But as promised, some good news. The Red Sox are finally going to get a look at pitcher Jordan Hicks, who was traded to Boston in the Rafael Devers trade but who was on the injured list with a toe problem when the deal was made. Hicks has been activated, though.
Also promising: Rookie prospect Marcelo Mayer has returned from his bereavement leave, and is back in the lineup at third base. And fellow top prospect Roman Anthony has, it seems, finally found the stroke that made him the most eagerly awaited arrival in Fenway Park in recent memory–he entered Monday’s game 6-for-13 in his last three games, and has raised his average over .200 after starting his career 2-for-27.
And now comes news that Alex Bregman, out since May 23 with a quad injury, is a lot closer to a return than even he expected possible.
Red Sox in Need of Power Hitting
Speaking to reporters in the Red Sox dugout on Monday, Bregman said his injury is surprisingly ahead of where he anticipated.
“I feel really good, today was the best I’ve felt during the rehab process, the fastest I’d ran, and resumed full baseball activity,” Bregman said, via the Boston Herald. “This is a lot of weeks ahead of what we predicted.”
Bregman has experience with quad injuries, as he missed 10 weeks with one when he was playing for the Astros in 2021. When he first suffered the injury, he feared he was headed for the same timetable. But the healing has gone better than expected and as time has gone on, he’s felt that he was ahead of schedule.
“Got another ultrasound yesterday that corroborated that,” Bregman said. “It showed that it’s healing exceptionally well.”
Alex Bregman ‘Loves’ Playing in Boston
That’s big news for the Red Sox, who need a speedy return from Bregman because, in the wake of the trade of Rafael Devers, the team is badly lacking in power in the lineup. Bregman hit 11 home runs and despite the time missed, he still ranks No. 2 on the team in that category behind Wilyer Abreu (14).
Bregman also addressed his long-term future, saying that he enjoys playing in Boston and would be open to signing a long-term deal to do so. He has an option on his contract after this season that, even with the injury, he is expected to exercise.
“I expected to love playing here and I have definitely loved playing here,” Bregman said, via MassLive. “It’s a great place to play baseball. Being able to play for this organization is awesome. My expectations were all very positive and it’s definitely lived up to those positive expectations.”
