Red Sox Hit With Blunt Alex Bregman Take Amid Blue Jays Link

The Boston Red Sox have a lot of young talent, and last season, they had a veteran leader like Alex Bregman, who has won multiple World Series titles, to show them the ropes at the major league level.

After one season in Beantown, Bregman opted out of his contract following a campaign in which he had a batting average of .273 with 118 hits, 18 home runs, 62 RBIs, and 64 runs scored in 114 games in 2025, per StatMuse.

As Bregman has yet to decide on his future, former MLB player Chris Gimenez believes that Boston doesn’t need to go all out to bring back the free-agent hitter.

“I think where they’re at, they still have a ton of talent on this roster,” Gimenez said in a December 27 video posted by MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM. “Does Alex Bregman help that out? Yes, of course he does. He’s the adult in the room. He’s the leader of that clubhouse. Somebody would have to fill that role. But you just made the trade for Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras. That’s going to help from the power standpoint that you may lose from Alex Bregman departing.

“I also think these young guys are ready, they’re ready. The Red Sox are actually in a really good position, if you ask me. I don’t think they have to sign Alex Bregman. Do I want them to? Yes, because I think he’s the perfect fit there. I would also like to see him in Toronto, because I think that’s a really good fit for him as well.”

Red Sox Need to Give Their Young Talent the Reins

Moreover, Gimenez believes that Boston need to let their young talent take the reins to see if they are ready to replace the production that Bregman will leave behind.

“The Red Sox have a lot of young talent that they have to find time for, that they have to develop at the big-league level,” Gimenez added. “Marcelo Mayer, I know he’s been hurt a lot, but he’s got to figure it out at the big-league level at this point. So I don’t think it’s the worst thing in the world if they don’t bring him back. I don’t think they drop dramatically. Will they drop? Certainly, yes. They still have a very good roster as it is.”

After getting a taste of the majors, Mayer will look to be one of the young players to bounce back in 2026. Last season, he had a .228 batting average with 29 hits, four home runs, 10 RBIs, and 20 runs scored in 44 games, per StatMuse.

The Red Sox Might Be Out on Alex Bregman

If one report is correct, the Red Sox could be preparing for a future without Bregman. Marquee Sports Network insider Bruce Levine shared on 670 The Score’s Inside the Clubhouse on December 27 that three teams seem to have emerged as the frontrunners in chasing the three-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion.

“The Cubs have had many conversations with Scott Boras about Alex Bregman,” Levine said (h/t Michael Cerami of Bleacher Nation). Bruce adds that, according to sources close to Bregman, the teams showing interest are the Chicago Cubs, Toronto Blue Jays, and Arizona Diamondbacks.
