The Boston Red Sox were one of the most active teams in MLB’s free agency and hot stove season last offseason. Now, as the market starts to heat up, it’s time for Craig Breslow and other front office executives to start thinking about what meaningful deals to make. It starts with Alex Bregman, who is currently a free agent, but Boston also has a glaring need at first base.
Boston made the playoffs for the first time in a few seasons in 2025, largely in part due to the moves they made in the offseason. A recent massive bold prediction has the Red Sox bringing in five-time All-Star first baseman Pete Alonso, which would be one of the biggest splashes this offseason.

Red Sox Predicted to Sign Pete Alonso to Five-Year, $145 Million Deal
It has been widely reported that Pete Alonso is seeking a seven-year deal, but it’s unclear at this point if any team is willing to commit to him that long-term. Either way, Alonso is the best hitter in this free agent class, and has set himself up for one of the highest AAV deals this winter.
In a recent free agent predictions piece by Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly, Pete Alonso is predicted to sign with the Red Sox on a five-year, $145 million deal:
“Well, for all that Alonso does well at the plate, he posted career-worst marks in defensive runs saved (minus-nine) and outs above average (minus-nine) in 2025. The Mets shouldn’t be ruled out, but it does feel like if a long-term deal hasn’t been reached over the last few years, it probably won’t be this offseason.”

Even Pete Alonso may be growing frustrated with the New York Mets after a highly disappointing 2025 season. The Mets had the highest payroll in MLB and did not make the playoffs.

Pete Alonso Is A Mets Franchise Legend
2025 featured Pete Alonso passing Mets’ legend, Darryl Strawberry, for most career home runs in Mets franchise history, which now belongs to Alonso at 264.
He’s made the All-Star team in four straight seasons and has averaged 158 games played per season since 2021. And that’s not even mentioning how valuable he is as a hitter. Alonso took home the Silver Slugger award for the NL this season after posting a 144 OPS+, 38 home runs, and 126 RBIs.
Since 2021, Alonso has averaged 39 home runs a season. He led the NL this season with 41 doubles as well.
While Alonso’s defense may be taking a step back, his offensive production makes up for it. What makes some analysts across MLB believe he may not return to New York is what David Stearns said about focusing on run prevention this offseason.
The Red Sox were a big mess this season at first base, and signing Pete Alonso would be the biggest possible upgrade you can make at the position this offseason.
