The Boston Red Sox took a much-needed nice step in the right direction this past season. After missing the playoffs from 2022 to 2024, the Red Sox put together an 89-73 record and made the postseason as a wild card club. This was after they finished the 2024 season with an 81-81 record.
The Red Sox’s playoff run ended up being short, however. This is because the Red Sox fell to the New York Yankees in the American League (AL) Wild Card round. After defeating the Yankees by a 3-1 final score in Game 1, the Red Sox lost to New York by a 4-3 final score in Game 2 and then a 4-0 final score in Game 3. With this, it was a very hard way for Boston’s season to end, especially when noting that the Yankees are, of course, their biggest rivals.
Yet, in the end, the Red Sox certainly should feel content with their 2025 season. They proved a lot of their doubters wrong and are now entering next season being viewed as among the top teams in the American League.
The Red Sox have also made some smart offseason moves that are making them look better on paper. The Red Sox have added pitchers Sonny Gray from the St. Louis Cardinals and Johan Oviedo from the Pittsburgh Pirates. Yet, even with Boston already making two notable additions to their pitching staff, they are now being urged to pursue a top trade target for their rotation.
Red Sox Predicted to Trade for Nationals’ MacKenzie Gore
In a recent article for Just Baseball, Ethan Hyatt predicted the biggest move that each American League team would make this offseason. For the Red Sox, Hyatt predicted that the American League East club would acquire Washington Nationals star pitcher MacKenzie Gore in a big swap.
“The stars seem to be aligning for the Red Sox to make another big move and pursue one of the top trade candidates in baseball in MacKenzie Gore of the Washington Nationals. The Nats have made it clear recently that they intend to hear trade offers on both Gore and shortstop CJ Abrams, and the Red Sox haven’t exactly been afraid of trading prospects in recent seasons,” Hyatt wrote.
It would certainly be understandable if the Red Sox made a big push for Gore. There is no question that their pitching rotation could still use a boost, especially with them being in the same division as the Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays.
Gore Would Give Red Sox Another Big-Time Pitcher to Work With
If the Red Sox won the Gore sweepstakes, there is no question that he would improve their pitching rotation. The 26-year-old pitcher is coming off his first career All-Star season, where he had a 4.17 ERA and a career-high 185 strikeouts. While he had a 5-15 record, it is important to note that he was pitching for a 66-96 Nationals club.
Overall, if Boston brought in Gore, he would have the potential to be a very nice pickup for them. This is especially so when noting that the 2017 third-overall pick is still young enough that he could hit a new level.
