The Boston Red Sox have played themselves right into playoff contention after a 10-game winning streak headed into the All-Star break. They have lost a couple of games following the break, but are still 54-48, and right in the thick of things in the American League Wild Card race, and the AL East certainly isn’t over either.
With nine days left until MLB’s trade deadline, the Red Sox are now expected to be buyers and could be looking to add another starter or two to round out their rotation. Pitchers are a huge need at this time of year for teams like the Red Sox, who are looking to finish the season strong. There are a lot of quality options out there, and recently, a particular southpaw from the Washington Nationals has floated around in trade talks.
Red Sox Predicted to Make Huge Deal for Mackenzie Gore
With the Washington Nationals out of contention for a fifth straight season and under a new general manager, there have been rumblings of Mackenzie Gore’s potential being on the trade block.
In a recent Bleacher Report prediction piece, Zachary Rymer predicts that the Boston Red Sox will end up landing Gore in a wild trade idea.
As Gore is only 26 and controlled through 2027, the Nats might as well listen and see if anyone offers a boatload of talent that could help get their years-long rebuild back on the right track. And if any team should indulge them, it’s the Red Sox.
“Whereas their offense has kept humming along even after the trade of Rafael Devers in June, the starting rotation just keeps getting thinner underneath staff ace Garrett Crochet. Kutter Crawford and Hunter Dobbins are already done for the year, and the same may prove to be true of Tanner Houck after his latest setback.”
A trade for Gore would solidify the Red Sox rotation as having one of the best 1-2 punches in the sport. Gore was named an All-Star this season for the first time and has improved in each of his four years at the major league level. He has a 3.59 ERA this season with 140 strikeouts in 112.1 innings.
Nats Would Certainly Ask for a Lot in Return
The Washington Nationals have a strong young core, but they are likely still a year or two away from contending. Now, the Boston Red Sox would certainly have to give up an insane haul that would have to include a couple of players on their roster now, and multiple prospects. However, as Rymer outlines, it’s not insanely outlandish.
“The Red Sox are contending despite this, and they would be wise to take the position that the World Series would be within reach if they scored a proper co-ace for Crochet. To this end, Gore is a perfect match on paper. As to whether he would be worth parting with, say, a Marcelo Mayer, a Wilyer Abreu, a Kristian Campbell or a Payton Tolle, chief baseball officer Craig Breslow should heed his own advice: “I think we’ve talked a lot about looking to the future, at some point, the future has to be now.”, writes Rymer.
The Red Sox have already made the biggest splash this trade season by dealing away Rafael Devers, so maybe they have another huge splash in store that would certainly benefit them greatly on paper.
