Red Sox Slugger Alex Bregman Linked to Yankees in MLB Free Agency

Alex Bregman has dealt with some injuries throughout the 2025 campaign for the Boston Red Sox, but outside of that, deciding to sign him was one of the better decisions the front office has made in a very long time.

Not only because of what Bregman does on the diamond, but because he’s one of the best locker room guys in Major League Baseball. He’s done a great job with some of the young guys, like Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer, and should only continue to help them for the foreseeable future if the Red Sox make the right decision to keep him around.

Bregman has an opt-out in his contract, which he’s expected to do, but the Red Sox have more than enough money to keep him around long term.

Will Alex Bregman Leave Red Sox?

If that doesn’t happen, Jeff Passan of ESPN took a look at some teams that could use him. He noted that the Boston Red Sox might have to worry about the New York Yankees.

“Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million contract with the Boston Red Sox on the eve of spring training, and the fit has been exceptional. Bregman has taken over the Red Sox’s clubhouse and become their unquestioned leader: a baseball rat whose wisdom is exceeded by his willingness to help his teammates find the best versions of themselves. It’s rare to find a player who has such a wide base of knowledge and the ability to teach it, too…

“Complicating matters for the Red Sox, though, are the teams in need of better production at third that might be willing to spend for what Bregman provides. The Phillies. The Yankees. The Tigers. And it will take more than three years this time even though he’ll be going into his age-32 season. After one of the more lucrative pillow contracts ever, Bregman is bound to get the five-year-plus deal at an average annual value of $35 million-plus that eluded him last winter,” he wrote.

There were reports last offseason indicating that the Yankees were interested in adding Bregman, but he decided to sign in Boston. It remains uncertain if the Yankees had an offer out for the current Red Sox star, but it’s something to be mindful of this winter, as New York will be in the mix for another third baseman.

Are the Cubs Out on Alex Bregman?

Regarding some other teams the Boston Red Sox might have to worry about, Jon Heyman of the New York Post doesn’t expect the Chicago Cubs to be in the mix now.

They were a team that made sense to have some level of interest.

Outside of that, the Detroit Tigers could be a team to watch out for. However, Heyman ended up stating that the Red Sox are the top fit for the 31-year-old.

“I think he fits Boston perfectly with that ballpark,” Heyman said. “A young team, and he’s a great leader. He makes incredible sense. I mean, obviously, he was out for a while with an injury, but he still has 16 home runs and an .848 OPS.”

“The teams that were interested in him previously were the Tigers and Cubs beyond the Red Sox,” said Heyman. “Now (Matt) Shaw is doing better at third base. I’m not sure about the Cubs, but the Tigers are certainly a team looking for a third baseman where he could be a fit. It does look like Boston is the best fit.”
