One thing that we learned about the 2025 Boston Red Sox is that they are close to becoming a major factor in the American League. They returned to the playoffs, and Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow is expected to be aggressive this offseason in adding to his team for 2026.
Starting pitching is an area that Breslow would like to add behind ace Garrett Crochet. He made it known at the General Manager’s meeting last week in Las Vegas.
“Starting pitching,” said Breslow. “And particularly someone we feel can start alongside or slot in behind Garrett and start a playoff game for us. Because of the depth that we’ve built up over the last couple of years, we feel pretty good about overall starting pitching and Nos. 3-ish through 10-ish, and that’s not to take away from guys who are certainly capable of doing more.
“It’s just to say, I don’t think we’re going to spend a ton of time trying to add a No. 4 or a No. 5 starter. If we’re going to make a starting pitching addition, I think it should be somebody who can pitch at the front of a rotation and start a playoff game for us.”
There are going to be plenty of free agent options as well as trade options. One name that could be moved this offseason is Freddy Peralta of the Milwaukee Brewers. The Red Sox were linked to him with an interesting trade proposal.
Red Sox Trade Proposal For Freddy Peralta
Peralta will be entering the final year of his contract next season and is owed $8 million. Most contenders would be lining up to try and acquire the right-hander. Brewers president of baseball operations Matt Arnold is anticipating him to be part of Milwaukee’s future.
Despite Arnold saying Peralta is part of their future, a trade proposal by Bleacher Report has the Red Sox as the top landing spot for him this winter. The package by Kerry Miller has Boston sending outfielder Wilyer Abreu, right-hander Hunter Dobbins, and left-handed pitcher Hayden Mullins, Boston’s 18th-ranked prospect by MLB.com.
“The headliner of Boston’s package to Milwaukee is very much open to debate. Top prospect Franklin Arias (Reuter’s No. 35) could be the centerpiece, as a promising middle infielder who turns 20 on Wednesday. It could be starting pitcher Payton Tolle or Connelly Early, both of whom made their MLB debuts right around Labor Day after skyrocketing through the minors this past season,” Kelly wrote.
There was another name that Kelly included, Boston first baseman Triston Casas. He has been seen by some as the long-term answer there. He was injured in early May and missed the rest of the season with a knee injury. A left-handed bat with power could be intriguing to Milwaukee.
“Triston Casas to the Brewers would also make a ton of sense, especially if Boston is as legitimately in the running for Pete Alonso as some of the early scuttlebutt would have us believe,” Kelly added.
Red Sox Have an Outfielder That Could Be Moved This Offseason
Breslow has a farm system that he could dive into to make a trade. He also has a plethora of outfielders that he could move. Jarren Duran is the name that has come up the most. Abreu is a name that is slowly gaining some steam.
He won his second straight Gold Glove in 2025. He solidified right field for Boston, and Ceddane Rafaela also took home a Gold Glove this season. Breaking them up would be tough for Breslow to do. However, rising star Roman Anthony provides a stacked outfield when you include Duran. It feels like someone is going to go. It’s not going to be Anthony or Rafaela.
Peralta would be an ideal trade target for the Red Sox. Moving an outfielder would be the starting point, but would it be Duran or Abreu? That’s the question for a team that is ready to load up and win now. Peralta would give them a huge opportunity to win now.
