For the Red Sox, there is little doubt that their season changed, in part, back in June when outfielder and top prospect Roman Anthony was called up from Triple-A Worcester. Sure, the Red Sox called up other youngsters, but it was Anthony who stuck and delivered in his first year. There was also the trade of Rafael Devers, which was clearly addition by subtraction in the Red Sox clubhouse.
But Anthony’s talent and energy were critical to giving Boston the jolt the team needed.
At least, that is, until Anthony was injured on September 2 at Fenway Park during a strikeout against the Guardians. The Red Sox have lost considerable offensive mojo since then, but still, a 4-3 come-from-behind, walk-off win on Friday against the Tigers helped them fend off collapse and put Boston back in the AL playoffs for the first time since 2021.
For Anthony, the question is when will he be able to get back into the lineup–and will it be too late when he’s ready.
Roman Anthony Injury: 4-6 Weeks Out
Anthony’s injury, an oblique strain, was originally slated to keep him out for 4-6 weeks, which means the early side of that return could come on Tuesday–September 30, exactly 28 days after the original injury. That’s unlikely, though. But on the lengthy side of his potential recovery, Anthony would be back on October 14, by which time the Red Sox could already be well into their offseason.
Anthony spoke about his contributions to the 2025 season and when he might be back on NESN on Friday after the game.
“Getting there,” he said. “Not looking too far ahead. Just trying to do everything I can every single day to show up and maximize everything I can in order to try and get back as soon as I can.”
Red Sox an ‘Unbelievable’ Group
The good news for Anthony is that he is able to celebrate a big moment with the team with some hope that he will be back in time to help for an October run. On Friday, he was enjoying the moment as much as he can, with the hope that there will be many more such moments on the Fenway grass and in the home locker room in the career of the 21-year-old slugger.
Anthony posted a 3.1 WAR this season–in a mere 71 games. That’s sixth on the team despite playing only 44% of a season.
“It’s amazing,” Anthony said. “First of all, I want to thank God for letting me be in this position, with this team, this group of guys, this city. I’m so blessed. I have had such an amazing time here so far, and this group is just unbelievable to be able to come to the yard with every day.
“For me, it was an unfortunate injury but I am doing everything I can to get back out there. And hopefully, I will play as soon as I can. Right now my job is to be the best cheerleader I can possibly be and just come here every day and support these guys.”
Red Sox Are 44-27 When Roman Anthony Plays
Anthony pointed out that he is not going to try to do anything extraordinary to come back, and if he does play again, he just wants to chip in to wins. The Red Sox were 44-27 when he played in 2025. They’re 44-45 when he does not.
Asked what his goal would be upon his return, Anthony said:
“Just playing winning baseball. Just continue to help and make sure I am as healthy as I can be to go out there and help this team win. Like I said, right now I am just trying to be the best cheerleader I can be and do anything I can for these guys. It’s such an amazing group.
“But just show up every single day and not look too far into the future and just have fun, and try to get as healthy as I can to help this team win a championship.”
