The Detroit Red Wings are continuing to impress as the 2025-26 season carries on. With their 4-0 win against the Chicago Blackhawks on Dec. 13, the Red Wings now have an 18-12-3 record and are in second place in the Atlantic Division. The Red Wings are also tied with the first-place Tampa Bay Lightning with 39 points, but have played one more game than them.
With the Red Wings aiming to put an end to their nine-year playoff drought, this kind of start to the season is very encouraging. Yet, at the same time, they still have a ton more work to do if they hope to get into the playoffs this year successfully. Teams like the Montreal Canadiens (38 points), Boston Bruins (38 points), Philadelphia Flyers (38 points), Pittsburgh Penguins (37 points), New Jersey Devils (37 points), and New York Rangers (36 points) are right behind them in the Eastern Conference standings.
The Red Wings have already tried to make a big splash this season to help improve their roster. According to NHL insider Pierre LeBrun, they were one of the teams that made a significant offer to the Vancouver Canucks for Quinn Hughes before the Minnesota Wild landed him.
After missing out on Hughes, the Red Wings certainly could look to improve the left side of their defense elsewhere. One interesting potential option for the Red Wings is San Jose Sharks defenseman Mario Ferraro.
Due to this, we here at Heavy Sports have a trade pitch that has the Red Wings acquiring Ferraro from the Sharks in a big move.
Red Wings Get:
- Mario Ferraro
Sharks Get:
- 2026 Second-Round Pick
- 2027 Third-Round Pick
- William Wallinder
Sharks’ Ferraro Among NHL’s Top Trade Candidates to Watch
After winning just 20 games last season, the Sharks have taken a nice step forward this season. They currently have a 16-14-3 record and are fifth in the Pacific Division. While this is the case, questions about Ferraro’s future in San Jose have come up, largely due to his pending unrestricted free agent (UFA) status.
Because of this, Ferraro was recently included on Greg Wyshynski’s latest trade board in the “Elite pending free agent tier.”
“Ferraro is the only other defenseman in this tier. There was talk last season that he’d be open to a change in scenery, but that was before the Sharks started turning the corner a bit thanks to Macklin Celebrini,” Wyshynski wrote. “If he’s not in the plans, he could bring something palpable back for GM Mike Grier.”
If the Sharks do make Ferraro available for trade this season, the Red Wings should make a big-time push for the left-shot defenseman.
Ferraro Would Provide More Stability in Red Wings’ Top Four
If the Red Wings acquired Ferraro, he would give them a clear upgrade in their top four. When looking at a specific spot in the Red Wings’ lineup where Ferraro could fit, their second pairing with Axel Sandin-Pellikka stands out. Ferraro would also be a prime candidate for the Red Wings’ penalty kill if acquired because of his steady defensive play.
Ferraro has appeared in 33 games this season with the Sharks, where he has posted one goal, seven assists, 62 hits, and a plus-2 rating. He has also recorded at least 120 hits in all six of his previous NHL seasons with San Jose, so there is no question that he would give Detroit’s blueline plenty more bite.
