The Detroit Red Wings have had a nice start to the 2025-26 season. At the time of this writing, they have a 17-12-3 record and are in third place in the Atlantic Division standings.
With the way the Red Wings have been playing early on this season, they are certainly improving their odds of snapping their nine-year playoff drought. Yet, with the Atlantic Division being so competitive, the Red Wings recently wanted to make a massive move.
The Red Wings were one of the teams heavily linked to superstar defenseman Quinn Hughes before he was traded to the Minnesota Wild. Missing out on Hughes is certainly a tough blow for the Red Wings, especially when noting that he could have been the final piece of the puzzle to make them legitimate contenders in the Eastern Conference.
Yet, with Hughes off the board, the Red Wings will now need to consider their options elsewhere. Improving the left side of their defense should still be a big priority for them, and they have a fascinating option to consider in Buffalo Sabres defenseman Bowen Byram.
Because of this, we here at Heavy Sports have a trade pitch that would have the Sabres send Byram to the Red Wings in a big swap.
Red Wings Get:
- Bowen Byram
Sabres Get:
- William Wallinder
- Amadeus Lombardi
- 2026 Second-Round Pick
Byram Is Among the NHL’s Top Trade Candidates Right Now
The Sabres are once again disappointing this season. They currently are at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings with 30 points and a 13-14-4 record. While there is still time for them to turn things around, the odds of them breaking their 14-year playoff drought are looking low right now.
Due to the Sabres struggling, a number of their players have come up in the rumor mill as trade candidates. Byram is undoubtedly among the notable Sabres creating chatter in the rumor mill right now.
Due to the trade rumors surrounding Byram, he was recently included on Greg Wyshynski’s latest trade board for ESPN.
“Byram, meanwhile, signed a two-year deal with the Sabres in July ($6.25 million AAV) but that didn’t quiet speculation he could be traded,” Wyshynski wrote.
If the Sabres do make Byram available, he would have the potential to be a very good addition to a Red Wings blueline that could use a boost.
Byram Would Give Red Wings Another Much-Needed Top-Four Defender
It is quite clear that the Red Wings’ left side could use some improvement. Thus, it would make sense for them to make a serious push for Byram.
Byram would give the Red Wings another legitimate top-four defenseman, which is a big need for them right now. When looking at Detroit’s current lineup, Byram could be a strong fit on their second pairing. In addition, due to his offensive skill, Byram would also provide the Red Wings with another option for their power play to work with.
In 31 games so far this season with the Sabres, Byram has posted six goals and 13 points. This is after he scored seven goals and set career highs with 31 assists and 38 points in 82 games for the Sabres this past season.
