Prospects and the Detroit Red Wings go hand-in-hand. They drafted the likes of Moritz Seider, Lucas Raymond, and Dylan Larkin, who are all cornerstones of the franchise moving forward.
They have done well drafting goaltenders, too, with Trey Augustine and Sebastian Cossa both being blue-chip prospects. The duo has the potential to be starting goaltenders for an NHL team. A new report has emerged that the Edmonton Oilers have checked in on at least one of these prospects.
Drafted 15th overall in 2021, the 22-year-old Cossa has excellent size, clocking in at 6-foot-6 and 229 lb. He split his time between the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL and the Red Wings. In 41 AHL games, he recorded 21 wins, a 2.45 GAA, a .911 SV%, and one shutout.
On the other hand, Augustine is a 20-year-old goaltender who doesn’t have the same size (6-foot-1, 183 lb) but has incredible skill. The 41st overall selection in the 2023 draft was lights out in the NCAA this year, posting 19 wins, a 2.08 GAA, a .924 SV%, and three shutouts in 30 games of work.
Red Wings Could Have Oilers “Goalie of the Future”
On Monday, August 11th, Cam Robinson of Elite Prospects made an appearance on The Sekeres and Price Show. During that appearance, he reported on the Oilers’ interest in Red Wings goalies.
“I do think they are looking. They are looking a little more long-term,” Robinson said. “I was told that they’ve contacted Detroit. I believe the first person they asked about was Trey Augustine, and I think that was just a non-starter. Steve Yzerman and company really love that kid.”
Robinson then discussed the possibility of the Oilers acquiring Cossa. Stating, that it wouldn’t be such a bad thing for them.
“But, they have a 6-foot-6, 6-foot-7 former first-rounder in Sebastian Cossa sitting there who’s slowly been progressing,” Robinson continued. “They are not soured on him by any means. But I think maybe they were hoping he’d be quicker along the path, and the fact that they have Augustine there in the system allows him to (potentially) be an expendable chip.”
“But if Edmonton does want to get themselves someone who can tag as ‘here’s our goalie of the future,’ he’d be a great bet to go on.”
Robinson believes that Cossa could be close to being an NHLer, and gives a timeline for when he thinks that could happen.
“Maybe (he) is only a year or two years away. He could still be a very good player.”
Red Wings Growing Impatient With Cossa?
During Steve Yzerman’s end-of-season press conference, he had some interesting words to say about whether Cossa is ready for the big leagues or not.
“He continues to trend in the right direction,” Yzerman said to the media present. “But, today I’m not prepared to say he’s going to play in the NHL next year. He’s got to do more.”
To date, Cossa hasn’t been given a true shake at the NHL level. The 22-year-old did well in his lone NHL appearance in the 2024-25 season. He came in relief of Ville Husso and stopped 12 of 14 shots to earn the Red Wings a win against the Buffalo Sabres.
The Red Wings could use a scoring winger, or top four defender to deepen their talent. Could they dangle Cossa in an effort to fortify those areas? We wait and see.
Red Wings’ Cossa Has Already Been Linked to Oilers
On his August 1st show, Oilers Now host Bob Stauffer mentioned a goalie the Oilers have a connection to.
“There’s a guy in an organization that hasn’t gained a lot of traction over the last few years,” Stauffer said on his show. “And they’ve got another really good goaltending prospect.”
After Robinson’s report, it is possible that Stauffer was talking about the Red Wings situation with Cossa.
Jim Matheson reported that the Oilers had Cossa “high up on their list” for the 2021 draft. They would have been able to keep a close eye on him, as Cossa played for the Edmonton Oil Kings, who use the same facilities as the Oilers.
