Reece James has sent an emotional message to Ben Chilwell after the ‘bomb squad’ member was sold to Chelsea’s partner club Strasbourg.

The Blues were keen to offload Chilwell in the summer transfer window with the English left-back eventually joining Liam Rosenior’s side, who like Chelsea are also owned by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.

Chelsea captain James has been left sad to see Chilwell leave Stamford Bridge after their time playing together for the west London club.

James and Chilwell become close after helping Chelsea win the 2020-21 Champions League and also due to the fact that they both struggled with significant injuries.

‘Ma boy man,’ James posted on his Instagram story on Wednesday night. ‘We’ve been through so much together.

‘So sad to see you leave man. Stay well brother and good luck with your next chapter!’

Chilwell was one of Chelsea’s highest earners and the Blues faced difficulties to get him off their books.

Chelsea paid £45m to sign Chilwell from Leicester City in the summer of 2020.

Chilwell played a total of 107 games for Chelsea, with the 28-year-old defender conjuring up nine goals and 13 assists.

He was sent out on loan to Crystal Palace for the second half of the 2024-25 campaign after being frozen out by Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca.

Speaking after his move to Strasbourg was confirmed, Chilwell said: ‘Joining Chelsea was such a proud day for me and my family.

‘It’s a club that when I was growing up, I saw them winning trophies year in, year out.

‘Fortunately, I’ve been able to achieve that [too] and I’ve been able to play in massive games.

‘The Champions League final stands out as one of the proudest days I’ve had in football. And then going on to win the Super Cup and Club World Cup.

‘Throughout my time at Chelsea, the support the fans have given me is something I’ll never forget.’

Posting on his own Instagram story, Chilwell added: ‘I gave literally everything for this club, so it’s nice for the appreciation. I love you guys, thank you.’
