Report: Bengals and Hendrickson Close Except for This Final Detail

Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson made the trip with the team to Landover to take on the Washington Commanders for Monday night’s preseason game. He didn’t dress of course as he’s still in a contract standoff with the Brown family.

Could that be coming to an end? Dave Clark of the Cincinnati Enquirer (that’s a newspaper for our younger readers) says that before the game it was reported that the Bengals and Hendrickson have now agreed on money and years, but that they still have a sticking point.

“ESPN’s Laura Rutledge reported before the start of the Cincinnati Bengals’ NFL preseason game against the Washington Commanders on Monday Night Football at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland, that defensive end Trey Hendrickson and the team have agreed on the years and total dollar amount for a new contract, but not on guaranteed money,” Clark writes.

Pardon my ignorance, but is this news? Unless they made more progress than initially thought, it’s been speculated for some time that the guaranteed years were a problem.

Bengals were fielding trade offers for Trey Hendrickson

On Sunday, word leaked that the Bengal were fielding trade offers for the 30-year old defensive end. That’s also not entirely new because Hendrickson was granted permission to seek a trade earlier in the offseason.

“With contract talks at an impasse, the #Bengals are listening to trade offers for perennial Pro Bowler Trey Hendrickson, per me & @TomPelissero,” Rapoport posted on X.

“It’s unclear if the NFL sack leader will be playing elsewhere in 2025, and a trade will be a real challenge. But time will tell.”

The reporting from Rutledge tonight leans toward Hendrickson staying. Perhaps the Bengals put the story out on the trade offers to coax Hendrickson a bit, but I’m not sure why that tactic would work. One would imagine that Hendrickson would love to play in any city not named Cincinnati at this point, but that’s conjecture.

Maybe Duke Tobin was right about wanting to get Trey Hendrickson signed

A couple of days ago, Bengals’ Director of Player Personnel Duke Tobin said on SiriusXM Radio that he loves Hendrickson and would like him to stay. Reading the quote, he really said a whole lot of nothing other than that he likes Trey.

“I got a ton of respect for Trey,” Tobin said this week. “Trey’s a fierce player. That’s what we look for — we don’t want guys that are on the periphery. We want guys that are in the mix, he’s in the mix. I know he loves football. I know he loves the camaraderie in football, the preparation in football, the practice in football.

“So all those things, I know he loves, and I’ve got so much regard and respect. And hopefully, we can get this thing going to where he’s active and up and running and helping the Cincinnati Bengals and his teammates win games. And he can help.”

The words seemed a bit empty coming just days before the report on the Bengals fielding offers. But, with Rutledge’s latest comments, maybe this deal is closer than we think.
