In a season with an unbelievable nose dive, there might be an even ore unbelievable twist ahead for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and their fans.
Before the Buccaneers faced the Miami Dolphins in Week 17, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport came out with a report that embattled Tampa Bay head coach Todd Bowles was not in danger of losing his job despite his team having lost 7 of its last 8 games, including a 20-17 loss to the Dolphins.
“This has led to some questions about head coach Todd Bowles,” Rapoport said on Sunday, December 28. “So, let me answer some questions before they begin. Todd Bowles received a 3-year contract extension before the season. He is under contract through 2028. They have won three straight division titles and still have the possibility of winning a fourth. Does that sound like someone who would be in danger of losing their job? I would say: Certainly not.”
For anyone who has seen the Buccaneers play in the second half of the season, that probably comes as a bit of a surprise — Bowles has been under fire like few head coaches in the NFL over the last month.
Bowles on Second NFL Head Coaching Job
Bowles entered Week 17 60-73 overall in 9 season as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins, where he was an interim coach at the end of one season, the New York Jets and Buccaneers.
Tampa Bay’s latest losing streak of 3 games came to all 3 of their NFC South Division foes, including home losses to the New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons before going on the road to lose to the Carolina Panthers.
After the loss to the Falcons, Bowles went off in an epic rant that immediately went viral.
“You don’t make excuses,” Bowles said in his postgame press conference. “You got to f—ing care enough where the s— hurts. It’s got to f—ing mean something to you. It’s more than a job. It’s your f—ing livelihood. How well do you know your job? How well can you do your job? You can’t sugarcoat that s—.”
Online Sentiment Clear: Fire Bowles Right Now
There is no gray area with Buccaneers fans and Bowles’ future employment.
They want him gone. Yesterday.
Since Week 9, when the Buccaneers were 6-2, Tampa Bay is last in the NFL in passing yards allowed per game (257), 29th in total yards per game (368) and 28th in points allowed per game (28.4).
Bowles made his name in the NFL as a defensive coordinator, including winning a Super Bowl with the Buccaneers following the 2020 season.
“I’m supposed to believe ‘Defensive genius’ Todd Bowles seat isn’t on fire with stats like this?” Bucs Wire’s EMT Ashlie wrote on X.
“Todd Bowles is a “defense first” head coach tho … alright,” Bucs fan Baker Muse wrote on X.
“Yo Glazers, If you don’t fire Todd Bowles at halftime I will kindly ask that you sell the Bucs to someone that has at least bare minimum cognitive awareness to do what you are afraid to do,” Buccaneers fan Shae Flex wrote on X. “Yours truly, All Bucs fans.”
“If I had a penny for every time since 2022 I heard an announcer say ‘He scored his first ever career TD’ Against this Todd Bowles defense?” Buccaneers fan Surf Renegade wrote on X. “(I dont even flinch anymore. I just expect it)”
