Richard Sherman Drops True Feelings on 49ers’ QB Situation

The San Francisco 49ers have a quarterback controversy on their hands with Mac Jones performing while Brock Purdy has dealt with a right big toe injury for most of the 2025 NFL season.

Nonetheless, it appears that Purdy is nearing a return from injury, and the question within the NFL media is what the 49ers should do at the quarterback position. Despite their Week 10 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, the Niners are in the middle of a playoff race at 6-4.

As a result, the decision made by the head coach, Kyle Shanahan, will likely have a significant impact on the team’s playoff aspirations. Heading into Week 11, former 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman shared his thoughts on the quarterback controversy.

“I just don’t see how Kyle will be able to take Mac Jones off the field with how he’s playing,” Sherman wrote on November 9. “I know Brock Purdy has to start if he’s healthy, but this is a hot-hand situation right now, and Mac is rolling. Not trying to spark controversy, but this is an obvious observation. Either way, Mac has made himself a lot of money and will be starting somewhere next season.”

How Close Is Brock Purdy to Returning to the 49ers?

Although Purdy didn’t return from his right big toe injury against the Rams, Shanahan indicated for the first time since it was aggravated in Week 4 that he could have been available as Jones’ backup.

Following the loss to Los Angeles, Shanahan spoke with the media and shared the latest regarding Purdy, noting that they intend to take their time with the quarterback until he’s 100 percent.

“He could have gone [as the No. 2], definitely,” Shanahan said (h/t ESPN). “I just decided to hold him up in that situation… It depends on how close to 100 percent he gets,” Shanahan said. “Our dilemma or what we’re trying not to do is put him out in the situation we did versus Jacksonville six weeks ago … I do believe he’s closer and further along than what he was at that time. Hopefully he’ll have a chance this week.”

49ers’ Mac Jones Talks QB Situation

In the 42-26 defeat to the Rams on November 9, Jones completed 33 of 39 passes for 319 yards, throwing three touchdowns and one interception while posting an 88.8 QBR. It also marked the fourth time this year he recorded a passer rating above 100.

Across eight starts, Jones has performed like a top-10 quarterback. He’s second in passing yards per game at 268.9, eighth in completion percentage over expectation at 3.1 percent, ninth in completion percentage at 69.6, and 10th in yards per attempt at 7.4.

What the future holds is still unclear as Purdy works his way back. Jones, on the other hand, has done plenty to prove he deserves another shot as a starting quarterback somewhere down the line. For now, he seems more focused on the present ahead of their Week 11 game against the Arizona Cardinals.

“I’ve never tried to look ahead,” Jones said. “It’s hard not to, but I never want to do that. I want to focus on each week and I know how challenging the NFL is just having played for a couple of years and feel like we have a young team that needs leadership right now and my goal is to lead them and get ready for Arizona.”
