Russell Westbrook Enters Rarefied Air With Latest Milestone

Two-time scoring champion Russell Westbrook added another NBA record to his Hall of Fame resume.

The former MVP reached 26,711 career points Friday, passing Oscar Robertson to become the NBA’s all-time scoring leader among point guards. Robertson was formerly the top scorer at the position with 26,710 points.

Westbrook also moved into the Top 15 on the NBA’s all-time scoring list after surpassing Robertson.

Westbrook finished the game with 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting, nine rebounds, six assists and four turnovers in the Sacramento Kings‘ 129-102 loss to the Phoenix Suns.

After the game, Kings head coach Doug Christie (who took over as interim coach earlier in the season) commented on the achievement:

“I didn’t know that he broke another record tonight. He continues to break records. Russ is a freak of nature, man. His competitiveness, his competitive drive, his spirit to continue to play as hard as he does… Always been a fan of his and it’s an absolute honor to coach him.”

Wesbrook was already the NBA’s all-time leader in rebounds and triple-doubles among guards. Now, the 18-year veteran has staked his claim as the all-time leader in points and field goals made among point guards, too.

Nearly two decades into his storied NBA career, Westbrook has established himself as a surefire Hall of Famer.

While examining his all-time ranks, one could even argue that the two-time scoring champion deserves consideration as the greatest point guard ever.

Westbrook, 37, still plays with the relentless motor he had when he entered the league.

He cuts the basket with reckless abandon, crashes the glass better than any guard in history and is a perennial triple-double threat.

Through 1,272 games played, Westbrook is the all-time leader in points, rebounds and field goals made among point guards. He also ranks third in blocks, sixth in assists, and seventh in steals all-time at his position.

He is seventh on the all-time assists leaderboard and is on pace to pass Mark Jackson and Steve Nash for fifth by the end of the season.

He is 289 points shy of becoming the first point guard to reach 27,000 career points.

With two scoring titles, an MVP award and a top ten ranking in every essential point guard statistic to his credit, there’s no denying that Westbrook is a living legend.

Again, one could even argue he is seated atop the all-time point guard rankings.

For fans of the high-energy guard, his success in Sacramento is a welcome sight. Westbrook bounced around the league a bit following a turbulent 2022 season with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Now, Westbrook appears at peace, closing a historic career by surging up the all-time leaderboards.

This season, Westbrook is shooting a career-high 36 percent from deep and 42 percent from the floor while averaging 14.5 points, 6.7 assists and 7 assists.

The veteran guard is also emerging as a potential Sixth Man of the Year candidate, though the Kings’ lack of wins may hurt his chances.
