One of the biggest names still available in free agency is Russell Westbrook. The former NBA MVP has been linked to the Sacramento Kings, but a new offer from overseas has reportedly been made.
According to Carmichael Dave of Sactown Sports 1140, Westbrook has an offer to play in China. The unnamed team is willing to pay the NBA’s triple-double king quadruple of what the Kings could offer him for just half a season in the CBA.
“I heard something from someone I trust enough not to blow off what they said. He may have an offer in China for about half a season, and it’s damn near quadruple what the Kings could offer him,” Carmichael Dave said.
Westbrook was previously linked to the Xinjiang Flying Tigers because they were named by one of the favorites to sign him, as per @PlayProphetX on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The CBA season starts this month and will end in March, with the postseason lasting from April to May. If Westbrook signs a deal in China for half a season, he could return to the NBA by January. It’s a route that several other players have taken over the years.
Kings Still Interested in Russell Westbrook
One of the guests on The Carmichael Dave Show with Jason Ross is The Athletic’s Sam Amick, who reported that the Sacramento Kings are still interested in Russell Westbrook. Some veteran players have spoken about wanting to play with Westbrook, and it could happen later in the season.
“I don’t really know who else is contemplating Russ other than the Kings. And I do still think he’s on their radar. The way it’s been put to me, if they come off another guard, then Russ could be a possibility, and I could see that happening later in the year,” Amick said.
If the rumors are true about an offer from China, Westbrook could play there until January and sign a contract with an NBA team for the rest of the season. The Houston Rockets were initially linked to him after Fred VanVleet suffered a season-ending knee injury.
Even Kevin Durant was open to a reunion in Houston, telling Kay Adams on the “Up & Adams” show that Westbrook deserves to be on a roster this upcoming season.
Former NBA Player Reveals Why Russell Westbrook Opted Out His Nuggets Contract
Russell Westbrook declined his $3.4 million player option to stay with the Denver Nuggets this offseason. Westbrook became an unrestricted free agent and remained unsigned with less than two weeks before the start of the season.
Former NBA player Danny Green revealed on his “Inside the Green Room” podcast that the Nuggets weren’t planning on using him as much as last season. It’s one of the reasons why Westbrook decided against returning to Denver despite averaging 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 1.4 steals per game.
“From what I heard is that they weren’t planning on to play him at all this year, even behind certain guys that he should be above. I feel like Russ is more out of pocket of opting out of his contract and not having one in place already,” Green said.
Sam Amick also reported that Westbrook’s former Nuggets teammates are shocked that he’s still a free agent, calling it “bonkers.”
