For the first time in his illustrious NFL career, quarterback Russell Wilson was demoted to third-string as the New York Giants faced the New England Patriots on Monday Night Football, and the move led straight into some major news over the Week 14 bye.
“Thrilled to have 10x Pro Bowler, 2020 Walter Payton Man of the Year and Super Bowl Champion @DangeRussWilson [Russell Wilson] on to talk ball this Sunday 👏,” NFL on CBS revealed on December 4, with corresponding reports indicating that the long-time QB has been hired as a “guest analyst” while the Giants are on their Week 14 bye.
Not long after, Wilson seemingly confirmed this news, quoting the post and commenting: “Talkin’ Ball w/ the Fellas on Sunday! @NFLonCBS 🏈🏆”
Needless to say, this is a massive career shift for Wilson, as he appears to be dipping his toes in the broadcasting waters for the first time.
Russell Wilson’s NFL Career Could Come to an Abrupt End After Disastrous Giants Tenure
GettyIs New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson considering retirement after the 2025 NFL season?
Just last year, amid a midseason winning streak as the starting quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Wilson talked about playing football into his forties. Then things took a turn, and by the offseason, the Steelers didn’t even want the veteran QB back — pursuing deals with Justin Fields (signed with the New York Jets), Mason Rudolph, and Aaron Rodgers instead.
That was the first in a pattern of 2025 reality checks for Wilson, who didn’t garner much attention in free agency after Pittsburgh chose to let him walk.
Eventually, Wilson landed with the Giants, who were quite possibly his only suitor. As we know, his time as the NYG starter didn’t last very long with first-round pick Jaxson Dart nipping at his heels.
Of course, it didn’t help that Wilson put together a couple of the worst performances of his career with the Giants in Week 1 and Week 3, leading to an early quarterback change in Week 4.
It should be noted that Wilson handled his benching with grace and professionalism, but his stint with the Giants was disastrous for his NFL future, nonetheless. At one point, many thought Wilson was a definite Pro Football Hall of Famer, but now, some have soured on that belief.
Either way, it’s hard to see Wilson getting a starting offer in 2026, and it’s unclear if he’d be willing to continue his career as a backup.
Like most former Super Bowl champion quarterbacks, Wilson has not been shy about wanting to start. To his credit, he’s supported Giants teammates Dart and Jameis Winston at every turn, but it’s also safe to assume he’s not happy with the way things went in New York.
With his career seemingly at a crossroads, it wouldn’t be all that shocking if Wilson abruptly retired to pursue an opportunity elsewhere, like broadcasting. And CBS just gave him his first official audition.
All Eyes Are on Wilson News During the Giants’ Week 14 Bye
With not much else going on during the Giants’ Week 14 bye, fans could find themselves tuning in to see how Wilson does as an analyst.
NorthJersey.com beat reporter Art Stapleton gave his take on the situation on December 4, replying: “Russell Wilson as a studio analyst for CBS on Sunday won’t be an easy transition. There’s no doubt Russ is smart and knows the game, obviously. [But] will CBS give him that platform?”
“If anyone is expecting Russ to adopt the First Take mentality, not sure he fits that role,” Stapleton continued. “I can’t see him hot-taking players. Let him break down QB play.”
Love him or hate him, Wilson has always made headlines as a compelling player and sports figure. The veteran has had his fair share of fallouts with head coaches and behind-the-scenes dramas, but he has always been known as a great teammate despite that, and he’s certainly always handled himself well while speaking with the media.
All this bodes well for a post-playing career in television or broadcasting, although those positions are becoming just as competitive as Wilson’s former job as a starting NFL quarterback.
