Russell Wilson Makes a Decision About His NFL Future

Championship-winning quarterback Russell Wilson has had a rough road with the New York Giants this season. He began the season as the team’s starting quarterback, but after a 0-3 start, the Giants benched him in favor of rookie Jaxson Dart. Now, the Giants are still at the bottom of the NFC East with a record of 2-8, which is why head coach Brian Daboll was let go on Monday, November 10.

Ever since Wilson was benched back in September, people have wondered if Wilson would rather jump ship and find another NFL team. He jumped right into his role in New York City, even attending high-profile New York Knicks games and sporting Giants gear before he took the field.

So, is Wilson looking for a gig somewhere else? During a press conference on Wednesday, November 12, Wilson was asked about his future with the franchise, and he gave an honest and candid answer.

Russell Wilson on Whether He Wants to Leave the New York Giants

When asked about he still wants to be in New York considering how his season has gone, Wilson made it clear that he’s happy were he is, even if it’s on the bench. He’s a team player and says that he loves his colleagues.

“I love it here,” Wilson said. “I love my teammates.”

Wilson was also asked how he reacted to Jameis Winston getting the starting job on Sunday, November 16, over Wilson. Again, he was gracious.

“Obviously, I want to play, but Jameis has worked his butt off to give him a great opportunity,” he said. “He’s a guy that’s played in this league for a long time and he’s one of my closest friends.”

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported on Wednesday that Winston would get the start, noting, “Jameis Winston is elevated to No. 2 QB and expected to start Sunday in the event Jaxson Dart doesn’t clear the concussion protocol, per The Insiders. Winston was moved ahead of Russell Wilson, as interim coach Mike Kafka informed them.”

Back in October, Wilson said that he would be ready to go if the Giants needed him on the field again. “I’ll be ready to go when I need to get back in there and everything else. Staying prepared,” Wilson said, according to ESPN. “You never know what happens in this league and everything else. So I’m confident in the moment and all that.”

New York Giants Have a New Leader

Giants assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka was announced as the New York Giants’ interim head coach.

“We spoke this morning about the direction of our franchise on the field, and we have decided that, at this time, it is in our best interest to make a change at the head coaching position,” president John Mara and chairman Steve Tisch said in a joint statement about the change.

Time will tell who the Giants bring on as their permanent head coach. For now, the team is looking ahead to their game on Sunday, November 16, against the Green Bay Packers at home.
