No matter what one thinks about New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson on the field, off the field, he’s a person who is easy to respect. Wilson Wilson is a family man and married to singer Ciara. He’s also religious, which he’s displayed on social media, and Wilson really seemed to throw himself into the quarterback role with the New York Giants this season, even though it didn’t work out for him.
Wilson started in just three games for the New York Giants this season. His reign as the starting quarterback for the franchise ended after the first three games of the season, and then, the Giants replace him with rookie Jaxson Dart. The Giants selected Dart with the team’s 25th-overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft, and they traded up to get him. It was a slightly risky move, but it’s paying off, and Dart has a 2-1 record since getting named the Giants’ starting signal-caller. His chemistry with Giants running back Cam Skattebo is golden, too.
But, back to Wilson. It’s bad enough that he got benched just a few games into the season, but now, his former coach Sean Payton is taking a jab at him. Wilson is fighting back, too, which is uncharacterized for the usually soft-spoken player.
New York Giants Quarterback Russell Wilson Fights Back
Payton appeared to throw shade at Wilson after Denver’s comeback win over New York Giants on Sunday, October 21, 33-32. During Payton’s postgame press conference, he told reporters that he had spoken with Giants owner John Mara earlier this year and said that he wished the franchise had waited longer to make the change from Wilson to rookie Jaxson Dart, implying that the Denver Broncos would have had a better chance to win in their matchup if they had gone up against Wilson.
Well, Payton, the Broncos won, even with Dart. So, we’ll never know what the result would have been with Wilson. But, either way, Payton’s comments weren’t very nice.
Now, Wilson has now taken it upon himself to respond. In a post on X on Tuesday, October 21, Wilson said, “Classless… but not surprised…. Didn’t realize you’re still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the media.” He hash-tagged it “let’s ride” with some laughing emojis.
The “bounty hunting” reference is probably a reference to Payton’s involvement in the New Orleans Saints’ “Bountygate” scandal, which earned him a suspension.
New York Giants Going Into Week 8
The New York Giants’ next game is Sunday, October 26, against the Eagles. Losing to the Broncos hurt the team in power rankings a bit, which is to be expected. According to USA Today’s latest NFL tally going into Week 8, Nate Davis puts the Giants at No. 24 on the tally. But, he had good things to say about the team.
“Bad as Sunday’s loss in Denver was, let’s not lose sight of how well this young offense performed for three quarters against what’s perhaps the league’s preeminent D,” he said.
With Dart and the helm and Wilson helping behind the scenes, there’s no reason the Giants can’t fight back and snag some more wins and the season progresses. The Giants’ NFL bye week isn’t until Week 14, so they don’t get a break soon.
