There’s no rest for the weary in the Ryder Cup. An action-packed Day 1 came to a close as the sun set on Long Island, and Team USA and Europe will run it back for Day 2 at sunrise at Bethpage Black.
The Europeans sent a resounding message in the opener. Luke Donald’s team was a buzzsaw in morning foursome play, finishing the morning session with a 3-1 lead. The Euros added to that lead in the afternoon best-ball session and ended the day with a 5.5-2.5 lead.
The good news for Keegan Bradley and Team USA? There are still 20 points up for grab, starting with the Day 2 foursomes on Saturday morning. Here are the matches, tee times and pairings for Day 2 at the Ryder Cup.
Match 1 (7:10 a.m.)
Bryson DeChambeau, Cameron Young (USA) vs. Matt Fitzpatrick, Ludvig Aberg (Europe)
DeChambeau tried to play the role of Team USA sparkplug on Day 1, and after a thunderous drive led to a birdie on the first hole of the first group of the day, it was all downhill from there. He went 0-2-0 for the day, and the Americans almost certainly won’t win if he can’t get on the board. Young, meanwhile, looked very good in his Ryder Cup debut in the afternoon, sparking some debate as to whether he should have been out in the morning, too. For Europe, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it; Fitzpatrick and Aberg stomped out Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley in Day 1.
Match 2 (7:26 a.m.)
Harris English, Collin Morikawa (USA) vs. Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood
Data Golf used its projections to rank all 132 possible combinations for each team, and for the Americans, the No. 132 pairing was … English and Morikawa. Anyway, they lost 5 and 4 to McIlroy and Fleetwood, two of the best Ryder Cup players in recent history. Europe is -250 to win this match.
Match 3 (7:42 a.m.)
Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay (USA) vs. Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton (Europe)
The good news for USA? Schauffele and Cantlay won their foursomes match for the only American point. The bad news is Rahm and Hatton looked borderline unbeatable in their own 4 and 3 beatdown in the first match of Friday’s morning sessions.
Match 4 (7:58 a.m.)
Russell Henley, Scottie Scheffler (USA) vs. Robert MacIntyre, Viktor Hovland (Europe)
All 24 players played on Day 1, and maybe none looked less ready for the moment than Henley. He looked every bit the Ryder Cup rookie he is, and whatever magic he and Scheffler conjured up at the Presidents Cup was nowhere to be found.
