Saints Offense Struggling to Find Rhythm at Training Camp

Through the first nine practices of New Orleans Saints training camp, offensive cohesion remains elusive. Despite early optimism, the unit has failed to generate rhythm or consistency. Rookie Spencer Rattler, Tyler Shough, and Jake Haener continue to split reps, preventing any one player from seizing momentum.

Saints Wire‘s John Sigler says no matter what we’ve seen in camp, “we won’t get a real idea at how this group stacks up until they start throwing real passes at real game speed.”

Head coach Kellen Moore has not yet named a starter. That indecision, while understandable in a rebuild, has hurt timing with receivers and pass protection adjustments. The offense has been regularly outplayed by the defense. While the defense is retooled, it’s still largely the group that finished 19th in the NFL in points allowed last season.

Quarterback Carousel Hurts Continuity

The Saints hoped a fierce competition would bring out the best in their young quarterbacks. Instead, it has made progress difficult. Spencer Rattler, last year’s fifth-round pick, shows flashes of promise. But with inconsistent snap counts, he has struggled to settle in.

Tyler Shough, taken in the second round of the 2025 draft, earned early first-team reps. However, his accuracy remains a concern, especially under pressure. Meanwhile, Haener has fans in the building but remains a long shot to win the job outright.

On Day 9 of camp, the rotation again limited the offense’s ability to sustain drives. As Saints Wire noted in its recap, the defense won most team drills, often forcing the quarterbacks into checkdowns or low-percentage throws.

Sunday Scrimmage for Saints

ESPN’s Katherine Terrell reported the Saints will hold a scrimmage on Sunday with the possibility of some live tackling. Moore stated that his coaches would be making calls live rather than relying on a script.

It should be a great opportunity for one of the quarterbacks to begin to separate themself from the pack.

Offensive Line Reshuffled

The Saints struggled to protect the passer last season. Injuries ruined continuity and the offensive line allowed 37 sacks.

New Orleans suffered a blow to building continuity when it was announced that Nick Saldiveri would go on the injured list with a knee injury. Saldiveri has faced numerous battles with injury in his short career, missing 19 games in two seasons.

The team signed veteran Shane Lemieux in his place. Lemieux started four games last season for the Saints and has played both center and guard.

The Road Ahead

New Orleans needs clarity fast. The quarterback competition will likely remain open into preseason, but at some point, Moore must pick a direction. The longer the rotation continues, the harder it will be to develop an offensive identity.

The defense continues to carry camp, which is encouraging. However, the offense’s lack of progress is now the main storyline. With preseason games approaching, the pressure is on to show meaningful improvement.

If not, the Saints may need to look outside the building in search of the right mix. As it stands, they are a team still looking for answers.
