Through four games, one could very easily argue that Victor Wembanyama is the best player in the world. The San Antonio Spurs are undefeated, Wemby looks like an MVP candidate, and he took home Western Conference Player of the Week honors.
To kick off the season, he is averaging 31 points, 13.8 rebounds, and 4.8 blocks. He is shooting 36.4% from deep and 60.3% from the field, posting career-highs across the board.
The Spurs are expected to come back to Earth at some point, but for now, it’s their league. With very real playoff hopes, the Spurs appear to be well ahead of schedule.
On top of that, the Spurs are yet to see Wembanyama at his best.

San Antonio Spurs to Put Wemby in New Position
Granted, four games are a limited sample size. However, Wembanyama is the best defender in the NBA, looks like one of the best scorers, and is playing bully ball for the first time in his career.
While everyone else is playing with a ten-foot rim, Wembanyama is shooting on a Nerf hoop.
In his first two seasons, he amazed, although the Spurs were lacking, posting losing records. Wembanyama is yet to play in the NBA postseason, but once the Spurs get there, he is expected to take a leap.
Wembanyama was recently compared to three of the best players in the game.
“Steph Curry, obviously, is fantastic in the regular season, but he’s exceptional in the playoffs. Tyrese Haliburton has raised his game in the playoffs. Jimmy Butler, historically, has raised his level in the playoffs,” listed Sports Illustrated’s Rachel Nichols on October 28th. “I can see Victor Wembanyama, as exceptional as he is throughout a season, being one of those guys who even comes through in the playoffs even more.”
The Spurs have clear goals of making the playoffs, and Wembanyama’s play, if sustainable, should be more than enough to get them there. If Wemby is playing for something that matters instead of simple regular-season games, expect him to tap into another level.
Victor Wembanyama Sent Warnings to the NBA
The Spurs have not made the postseason since 2019. Wembanyama has not played for a winning team since the summer of 2024, when he led France to an Olympic gold medal.
In the Olympic tournament, he averaged 15.8 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 3.3 assists. He showcased that he is capable of taking over games when needed, helping France to a second-place finish.
In the French League Finals, back in 2023, Wembanyama averaged 16.3 points and seven rebounds as an 18-year-old.
Imagine what he can do now that he’s grown into his body. The Spurs haven’t put him in a position to find postseason success, but his international track record suggests he can rise to the occasion. Even if they barely sneak into the playoffs, expect the Spurs to be a scary team.
