San Antonio Spurs Fans Will Love 2 Words Victor Wembanyama Used to Describe Himself

The San Antonio Spurs have enjoyed their fair share of star power. George Gervin, Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, David Robinson, Manu Ginobili, and Kawhi Leonard all played Hall-of-Fame-level basketball for the team.

However, Victor Wembanyama is the biggest superstar the team has ever had. His jaw-dropping highlights, international appeal, and fame off the court are all new to the Spurs. In a way, he’s the least “Spursy” player San Antonio has ever had.

However, he’s said all the right things so far. He prides himself on team success and readily takes the blame for any shortcomings. As he aspires to be one of the best players in the world, he used two words to describe himself.

Wemby Asks San Antonio Spurs to Win

In his first two seasons with the Spurs, Wembanyama has yet to enjoy a winning season. Of course, the Spurs were conducting a rebuild–tanking, even–although the timeline to win has officially started.

Wembanyama is yet to play “winning basketball,” and he has urged the Spurs to change that.

The first priority is always to be a winner,” Wembanyama told Loïc Prigent on a podcast appearance. “For the NBA, I’d like people to see me at the end of my career as a winner who has won a lot of titles for the team that drafted me.”

Being a “winner” is synonymous with San Antonio. So is being “loyal,” which is another word Wemby made clear he values.

As the NBA grapples with trade rumors surrounding its best player, a player going out of his way to praise his organization and make a pledge of loyalty goes a long way. Wembanyama has the potential to be the best player in franchise history, and Spurs fans can breathe a sigh of relief.

San Antonio Spurs Are Building Around Wemby

In Wembanyama’s first two seasons, no one really expected the Spurs to be a great team, even if they boasted him on the roster. As his third season gets underway, it’s clear that the team has taken a massive leap.

In his first two seasons, the Spurs experimented with Jeremy Sochan playing point guard, utilizing two centers in the starting lineup, and simply didn’t have elite talent around him.

Since then, the Spurs have brought in complementary backups, rounded out the young core, and used veteran talent to serve as mentors. Still undefeated, it’s clear that the investment paid off.

A rebuild is rarely done overnight. The Spurs have missed the playoffs every year since 2019. They traded away Derrick White, Dejounte Murray, and Jakob Poeltl for draft capital. Their tanking for Wembanyama was intentional, and now that he’s here, it’s time to win with him.
