San Antonio Spurs Get Injury Update Before Showdown vs. Pacers

The San Antonio Spurs are ready to hit the ground running. They have only two preseason games left before they take on the Dallas Mavericks to open the season. Both of the last two preseason games will come against the Indiana Pacers.

The Spurs have enjoyed consistent play from Victor Wembanyama, promising action from Luke Kornet, and the rest of the supporting cast has sprinkled in some quality minutes.

Guards De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper have all battled injuries this preseason. Fox is yet to suit up at all this season with a hip injury, and Harper made his debut on Friday against the Jazz.

Before the penultimate game, the Spurs got a promising update on Castle.

Stephon Castle to Make Preseason Debut

Stephon Castle played in 81 games last season, but is yet to suit up this preseason for the Spurs. He has been dealing with a bone bruise in his knee.

As a result, Victor Wembanyama has shouldered some playmaking duties, although once the season starts, he is expected to be a scorer, not a passer. Between Harper, Castle, and Fox, the Spurs have no shortage of playmaking.

Castle, of course, is the most experienced Wembanyama teammate.

“Steph Castle, out last week with a knee bruise, is expected to make his preseason debut tonight in Indiana,” reported FanDuel Sports Network’s Dan Weiss.

Castle won Rookie of the Year last season, averaging 14.7 points and 4.1 dimes. He is one of the best defenders on the roster and is expected to be Wembanyama’s running mate for the next several seasons.

Fox remains out, and Jeremy Sochan, Kelly Olynyk, and Jordan McLaughlin are all questionable after missing the last game.

Injury Update Bodes Well for San Antonio Spurs’ Future

On paper, Fox is easily the second-best player on the roster behind Wembanyama. However, he only has five games with Wemby under his belt. The Spurs need to build chemistry, and fast.

Castle had all of last season to work with Wembanyama. Harper and Wemby have already connected, and Fox will not even make the lineup on opening night.

The Spurs are Wembanyama’s team, and in an ideal world would have an established All-Star running point. Fox fits the bill, although a myriad of injuries have kept him off the court.

One of the Spurs‘ three guards will likely be traded before the start of next season to add more spacing and perimeter defense alongside Wembanyama. In all honesty, it will be the worst or least reliable of the trio who gets shipped out. So far, Fox seems to be that guy, and the Spurs can focus on building a successful future.
