San Antonio Spurs Urged to Be Patient With Victor Wembanyama

Despite losing each of their last two games, the San Antonio Spurs are mostly in a good spot. Injuries have slowed them down, subsequently having a negative effect on Victor Wembanyama, but they are still 5-2.

Not a bad spot to be, and once De’Aaron Fox returns to the court, the Spurs should have even better chances.

So far this season, Wembanyama is averaging 25.6 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 4.1 blocks. He’s played at an MVP level more often than not. Still, one thing is holding the 21-year-old back.

San Antonio Spurs Don’t Have a ‘Blueprint’

The perk of being a once-in-a-generation talent is that no one can plan for you. The bad side of being on that level? No one can plan for you.

Opposing defenses throw everything at the wall to see what sticks, and rarely does anything. However, the Spurs also have no idea how to build around Wembanyama. Not until year three did they add a star-level point guard, and Fox has spent most of his time in San Antonio injured.

With no past star with a similar skillset to copy, neither Wemby nor the Spurs are in familiar waters.

Wemby is obviously dominating, but he doesn’t have a blueprint,” said Richard Jefferson on the Road Trippin’ podcast. “Even LeBron had a Magic Johnson blueprint, you had a Scottie Pippen blueprint. Like Michael Jordan, you have a Kobe Bryant. There are certain blueprints of like, ‘Hey, this is who I am, this is how other players like me have dominated the game with this skill set.’ He’s at such a level that there’s never been a player like him.”

Keeping in mind that this is one of the worst versions of Wembanyama the Spurs will ever see, it’s hard not to get carried away. After all, he does have GOAT potential.

Spurs Need Wembanyama to Find ‘Consistent Level’

This season, Wembanyama has twice scored over 30 points. He’s also been held to under 30 points twice.

In most games, he’s forced his way to the rim. In others, he’s had trouble getting to his spots and has had to settle for low-percentage shots. He’s the best player in the league some days and an above-average center on others.

“We know he can dominate the game,” Jefferson added. “But how does he figure out a way to dominate the game at such a consistent level that it’s unstoppable? And he has that ability. They just haven’t figured it out. And it might take him a little bit longer because there is no blueprint.”

Until the Spurs can build a blueprint of their own, expect the growing pains to persist.
