We are about a week removed from the 2025 MLB trade deadline, and although the San Diego Padres made multiple huge splashes to improve the roster right now by acquiring the likes of Mason Miller, Ramón Laureano, and Ryan O’Hearn, their farm system was completely depleted after president of baseball operations AJ Preller sold nearly the team’s entire prospect capital.
The Padres are just three games back in the National League West, and believe they have the roster for the here and now, and Preller believes that as well when he traded away their top prospect in Leo De Vries to the Athletics.
Padres’ Farm System Now Ranked Last in Baseball
In a complete prospect fire sale, the San Diego Padres got rid of six of their top ten prospects, so it should come as no surprise that their farm system took a big hit in the latest “post-deadline” rankings.
In Bleacher Report’s “Biggest Shake-Ups to MLB Farm Systems” recent piece, the Padres are named as one of the biggest fallers:
“It might come as a bit of a surprise to see the Padres anywhere but the “No. 1 Faller” position, but considering they already had one of the thinner systems in baseball ranked No. 26 overall in our latest update, they simply didn’t have very far to fall. Shortstop Leo De Vries is one of the best prospects ever traded at the deadline, with a chance to be a franchise cornerstone at shortstop, but he is also still only 18 years old and at least a couple years away from reaching the majors. They managed to add Mason Miller, Ryan O’Hearn, Ramón Laureano, JP Sears, Freddy Fermin and Nestor Cortes without parting with catcher Ethan Salas or their most recent first-round picks Kash Mayfield (No. 25 in 2024) and Kruz Schoolcraft (No. 25 in 2025),” wrote Joel Reuter.
As Reuter noted, the Padres were already low in the rankings, but they dropped to dead last after the post-deadline rankings were revealed. Preller did a nice job of greatly improving their roster right now, but with both Laureano and O’Hearn set to be free agents following this season, there is increased pressure for San Diego to make a deep playoff run this season.
So, Who Did the Padres Give Away?
Aside from shortstop prospect De Vries, the San Diego Padres traded away left-handed pitcher Boston Bateman, right-hander Henry Baez, RHP Braden Nett, shortstop Cobb Hightower, and RHP Tyson Neighbors.
Acquiring Miller is as big a move as there was at the deadline, but it essentially cost the Padres everything they had on the farm. This move shouldn’t have come as a surprise, as Preller is known for making insane splashes, like when he traded away the most players ever for Juan Soto.
The new top prospect in the Padres organization is catcher Ethan Salas, who is the only prospect on San Diego’s farm that is a top 100 prospect, according to MLB.com.
