At his end-of-season press conference on Wednesday October 1, 2025, San Francisco Giants President of Baseball Operations Buster Posey revealed that 1B/DH Bryce Eldridge will have offseason surgery to remove a bone spur in his right wrist.Â
Eldridge is the Giantsâ top prospect and the No. 13 ranked prospect in the entire MLB. He is widely regarded as a franchise player of the future for the Giants.Â
Posey noted that the recovery timeline for Eldridgeâs injury is likely just 8 weeks, so it wonât limit him for 2026 Spring Training or the 2026 season at all.Â
Still, the news came as a bit of a surprise to Giants fans, who hadnât heard of an Eldridge injury at all before this point.Â
Could The Injury Have Impacted Eldridgeâs Pro Debut?Â
The Giants called up Eldridge to San Francisco for the first time in his baseball career on September 15, 2025 to give them a lineup boost after starting first baseman Dominic Smith went down with a groin injury.Â
Eldridgeâs call-up was a last gasp attempt to give the lineup a boost and help the Giants compete for the third and final wild card spot in the National League. Ultimately, they did not make the playoffs, and Eldridge didnât play that well either.Â
In 10 games, Eldridge hit only .107. He had 3 hits in 28 at-bats, no home runs, 4 RBIs and 1 run scored.Â
He also played only four of those ten games at first base, with all of his games in the field coming after September 21. In the other six, he was the designated hitter.Â
Could the injury have been an unseen factor affecting Eldridgeâs swing or fielding ability during his first few weeks in the major leagues? Itâs possible. He did have a few hits land just short of being home runs — those swings come to mind as plays his power could have been affected just a tad.Â
Eldridge will more than likely be better next season after he has another full offseason to develop, but perhaps Giants fans will see more production out of a fully healthy Eldridge as well.
Dominic Smith UpdatesÂ
Bryce Eldridge wasnât the only Giants first baseman that Posey and General Manager Zack Minasian provided updates about on Wednesday.Â
Minasian also said the Giants âwonât close the doorâ on a reunion with Dominic Smith.Â
Smith was one of the Giantsâ most consistent players this season. After he was signed off the street in the middle of the season, Smith hit .284 with 5 home runs and 33 RBI in just 63 games.Â
He played like a guy that should be a starting first baseman in the MLB.Â
The issue is, with the Giants, Smithâs future path to playing time is somewhat murky. With Rafael Devers and Eldridge in town, and both of them able to play a serviceable first base, Smith will not, in all likelihood, play every day in San Francisco. But on another team, he could play every day.Â
Smith is a significantly better defender currently than both Eldridge and Devers. Plus, the Giantsâ 1B/DH room will become less crowded with the all-but certain departure of longtime Giant Wilmer Flores. If he’s willing to learn to play outfield, he could find his way into the lineup nearly everyday.
Giants fans, do you think Bryce Eldridge will bounce back next season? Will the Giants re-sign Dominic Smith?Â
