San Francisco Giants Urged to Trade for Two-Time All-Star, Bay Area Legend

At the All-Star break, the biggest issue for the San Francisco Giants so far this season has been their inconsistent offense.

The Giants are third-worst in the whole MLB with a .228 team batting average. They also rank 25th in the league in home runs and 27th in slugging percentage. They are below-average in runs scored and RBI.

None of those are good numbers.

None of that is for a lack of trying on the front office’s part. Giants President of Baseball Operations Buster Posey has been actively trying to add big bats to the San Francisco lineup. That was first apparent with the signing of Willy Adames in the offseason and then in the trade to acquire Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox on June 15, 2025.

But the Giants have still been inconsistent and disappointing. While the starting pitching and bullpen have thrived, the Giants offense has lost them many games.

But with a playoff spot still in sight, insiders believe that the Giants are not done acquiring top talent.

Susan Slusser, a Giants insider, suggested in an article released on Monday July 14, 2025 that San Francisco may be interested in Brent Rooker, All-Star slugger for the Athletics

Rooker is hitting .279 with 20 home runs and 54 RBI in 2025. The slugger just participated in the MLB Home Run Derby on Monday July 14, 2025. He would provide an immediate boost to a Giants lineup that desperately needs it.

Giants Have A Recent History of Targeting Athletics Players

The Giants and Athletics will forever be tied by being former neighbors in the Bay Area when the Athletics played in Oakland.

Interestingly enough, while the Athletics may be headed out of town, the Giants have brought a lot of former Oakland Athletics favorites back to the Bay Area in recent years.

Bob Melvin, now the manager of the Giants, managed the Athletics from 2011-2021. The A’s made 6 playoff appearances in that time but never made it past the American League Division Series.

The Giants also boast third baseman Matt Chapman as one of their franchise players. Chapman is, of course, one of the best players in A’s franchise history.

Mark Canha is another former A’s fan favorite who briefly played for the Giants in 2024.

Rooker would continue the trend of returning former Oakland Athletics to the Bay Area.

Would the A’s Trade Rooker?

The Athletics have had a very disappointing season with a 41-57 record.

Sitting in last place in the American League West, the A’s are clearly going to be sellers at the 2025 trade deadline.

Starting pitcher Luis Severino is one player who has been heavily rumored as a candidate to be dealt by the Athletics in 2025.

But the Athletics just re-signed Rooker to a five-year, $60 million contract on January 8, 2025. They have an All-Star and Silver Slugger winner under contract for a bargain at $12 million for the next several years. It doesn’t make logical sense that they’d want to ship him off.

Except logic hasn’t applied to the Athletics franchise recently. They consistently ship off their best, most beloved players in the prime of their careers. It wouldn’t be that surprising to see them shop Rooker.

After all, Severino also just signed with the Athletics in 2025 and he’s already a very likely candidate to be traded.

What do you think Giants fans? Should the Giants go after Brent Rooker? Will the Athletics be willing to trade him?
