Scott McTominay has sent a heartfelt tribute to Jonny Evans as his former Manchester United teammate retires from football.

The 37-year-old has decided to hang up his boots as his contract at Old Trafford comes to an end, bringing to an end a glittering career.

The Northern Ireland international won three Premier League titles, the Champions League, FA Cup and two League Cups with Manchester United, also winning the FA Cup with Leicester City.

One of Northern Ireland’s greatest players, he won 107 caps for his country in an epic international career from 2006-24.

The centre-back had two spells with the Red Devils, coming through the youth set-up before playing in the senior side from 2006-15, then leaving for West Brom and then Leicester before returning in 2023.

That’s when he would have go to know McTominay, as they were in the first team squad together for a year before the Scotland international left to shine for Napoli.

Evans clearly made a big impression on McTominay during that 2023/24 season as the midfielder posted a moving message to him after his retirement was confirmed.

McTominay wrote on Instagram: ‘You are one of the best players, characters and professionals I have had the pleasure to play alongside.

‘Very fortunate to share some amazing memories with you. An incredible career and I wish you nothing but the best in your retirement. (Other than when we play golf).’

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has only worked with Evans for a short time but has also been very impressed by the veteran.

‘He has been a great professional. Whenever he has been fit, he has trained well with very high standards,’ Amorim said of the defender.

‘He has also proven on the pitch that he is a very good player. The level that he has in training, you can see the standards he had in his prime and why they won so many titles. When he was fit to train the level was really high. I also want Evans to help the young kids beside him.’

Evans made 241 appearances during his two spells with United, scoring eight goals and registering seven assists.
