At this rate, Scottie Scheffler could probably win a PGA Tour tournament with his son Bennett on the bag, but the world No. 1 will have a familiar face back as his caddie for the Tour Championship.
Scheffler’s longtime caddie, Ted Scott, will return for the final FedEx Cup playoff event, the PGA Tour announced. Scott had to leave the FedEx St. Jude Championship early due to a family emergency and also missed the entire BMW Championship.
Scottie Scheffler Welcomes Back Ted Scott for Tour Championship
If Scheffler was at all bothered by Scott’s absence, it didn’t necessarily show in his play. Scott left after the third round at the St. Jude, and Scheffler’s good friend and Tour chaplain Brad Payne made the trip from Dallas to Memphis to fill in.
With Payne on the bag for the final round, Scheffler shot a 67 and threatened to make a charge before settling for a tie for third.
“He did good,” Scheffler said of Payne in a post-round press conference. “Brad has stepped in before. He’s a great friend and he does a good job keeping me company out there.”
When it became clear Scott wouldn’t be able to make the trip to Maryland for the BMW, Scheffler called on veteran Tour caddie Michael Cromie, the full-time caddie for Chris Kirk. That proved to be a good call. Scheffler erased a four-shot deficit to start the final round and went on to win the BMW Championship, his first Tour win without Scott on his bag.
“Yeah, it was definitely different for sure,” Scheffler admitted after the final round. “But Cromie was doing a great job. He’s a guy I can trust. He’s one of Ted’s good buddies.”
How Ted Scott Makes Scottie Scheffler Even Better
While caddying for arguably the greatest golfer since Tiger Woods might seem like a simple job, Scheffler certainly doesn’t discount the impact Scott has on his game. Scheffler prioritizes simplicity and has made it clear in the past just how easy Scott makes it for him.
“Teddy pretty much does all the work. I pretty much just stand by the golf bag and do nothing,” Scheffler said on the “Bible Caddie” podcast following his 2024 Masters win. ” … He pretty much gets the number, we talk about the shot, and where we want to put the ball, and then hit it, really. Teddy does most of the prep work.
” … Most of the time he gives me the numbers adjusted to start, and I kind of like getting the adjusted numbers and then painting like a little picture for myself or the shot I want to hit.”
Scheffler wasted no time scooping up Scott after the caddie and previous boss Bubba Watson parted ways in 2021. The move paid immediate dividends. He won the WM Phoenix Open, the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Masters within the span of five starts and was off to the races.
“I just think Teddy does a really good job of keeping things simple so I’m not really having to think too much out there,” Scheffler added on the podcast.
With Scott back in the mix, Scheffler is the prohibitive favorite to win the Tour Championship and complete one of the greatest seasons in PGA Tour history.
