chris Gotterup didn’t just win a trophy as the Genesis Scottish Open champion. He didn’t just earn a spot in The Open, either. He also won a whole bunch of money.
The 25-year-old has officially arrived on the PGA Tour after holding off an impressive field to win his second career tournament at The Renaissance Club. Gotterup secured his spot in the 2025 Open Championship, and he’ll also walk away with the biggest paycheck of his career to this point.
The former college golf superstar had the weekend of a golfing lifetime in Scotland. He set the course record with a 9-under 61 earlier in the week, and he didn’t blink Sunday in a final-round pairing with McIlroy. Gotterup shot a final-round 66 en route to a two-shot win. He’ll also take him a tidy $1.575 million of the $9 million total purse for his efforts.
Chris Gotterup Gets Career Payday With Impressive Scottish Open Win
Here’s how the rest of the top 15 breaks down:
1. Chris Gotterup ($1.575 million)
T2. Marco Penge ($515,925)
T2. Rory McIlroy ($515,925)
T4. Nicolai Hojgaard ($407,250)
T4. Matt Fitzpatrick ($407,250)
6. Justin Rose ($304,875)
7. Sepp Straka ($270,675)
T8. Scottie Scheffler ($233,400)
T8. Ludvig Aberg ($233,400)
T8. Xander Schauffele ($233,400)
T11. Wyndham Clark ($189,675)
T11. Viktor Hovland ($189,675)
T13. Christiaan Bezuidenhout ($163,837.50)
T13. Andrew Novak ($163,837.50)
T13. Taylor Pendrith ($163,837.50)
T13. Kristoffer Reitan ($163,687.50)
As noted, the win gets Gotterup into The Open Championship where another hefty payday could be on the table. The purse for the final major of the 2025 season hasn’t been announced yet, 2024 champion took home a cool $3.1 million for his win, a big chunk of the $17 million that was up for grabs.
It’s been a lucrative few weeks for Gotterup. He made more than $161,000 for his T-23rd finish at the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club, before making roughly the same amount combined in stops at the Rocket Classic and John Deere Classic. For a guy who earned less than $200,00 in 10 starts between January and the end of March, the up-and-comer can probably go get himself a nice little present for the recent run of play.
Next Up: The Open Championship At Royal Portrush
Certainly, the Scottish Open leaderboard is going to age well with a handful of legitimate stars of the sport at the top of the page. That being said, not all of them were serious contenders to push Gotterup.
However, those players can go to Royal Portrush feeling good about their respective games. Scottie Scheffler is the favorite, followed by McIlroy, which was to be expected. Both said they felt good about where their games were heading into the season’s final major. As did Xander Schauffele, who began the week saying his game still needed to get better before looking to defend his title.
And as always, Justin Rose will be a player to watch for The Open after firing a 7-under 63 to shoot up the board in the final roun. Rose has never won the Claret Jug, but he finished tied for second a year ago, and despite missing the cut at both the PGA Championship and U.S. Open this season, he had a legitimate shot to win the Masters in the spring. Rose has three top-10 finishes in his last six major appearances, and he has three top-10s at The Open in the last 10 years.
